It makes sense during the boom times to wean the country solely off oil production anyway. It isnt going to go anywhere so can always amend the tax regime at a later date. Rudd only introduced the tax because WA wouldnt play ball over GST and Health. Breaking up Telstra while overpriced is a good move too imo. Will also be a goldmine for us ICT spoofers. Rudd strikes me as a man of vision but the Aussies are big on climate control and funking around with the carbon tax has cost him support.
Labor in NSW seem a bit like FF. Kenneally would get it I reckon. The civil service is bloated and there was a disastrous school building program which suited the Labor unions but is a bad deal for the taxpayer.

The school building program was disasterous? Again , what are you talking about? There have been complaints made about less than 2% of the projects involved. It has been a massive success and a great relief to those of us with kids in Australia primary schools that after 11 years of neglect, there is finally some capital expenditure on them.
Rudds problem was that he had closed himself off from public opinion through his small kitchen cabinet and advisors. Gillard needs to be more inclusive and work with her cabinet. She also needs to work with the Greens and Nick Xenophon in the Senate, if Rudd had done this, the ETS legislation would have passed.
Paul Keating is too busy these days worrying about the architecture of Sydney to soil his enormous mind with grubby everyday politics. How I miss him, I truly do.

The Catholic schools have been getting their schools built at a fraction of the cost that the State schools are. From what I have been told, the State handed out building contracts to the big builders in batches. Cost wasnt a concern so the taxpayer was fleeced.
Surely there is the view that if WA had been more welcoming to Ruddās health proposal and GST then the mining tax would not have gone as far. That is certainly my reading of the situation.
On Telstra, the NBN is paying Telstra to access their physical infrastructure - 9bn for that privellege. The NBN will then shoot their fibre optic infrastructure through this and act as a wholesaler. All companies will trade off this fibre optic infrastructure with Telstra likely to be an extremely dominant player early on. 2bn has been allocated to set up this USO company who will meet Telstraās universal service obligation for fixed voice infrastructure. it is good for Telstra as they are getting paid to phase away from their copper infrastructure but it should be a fairer marketplace for all customers. There is the view that mobile broadband is the way to go and that this 11bn is down the pan. I dont agree. Mobile broadband is expensive and shit at the moment. The days of businesses being able to operate through mobile broadband are still a good bit away imo. This NBN deal should be able to deliver cheap wholesale super fast broadband to well over 90% of the population of Oz with the likes of Vodafone, o2, Telstra etc delivering it to the home or office. That is my read of it anyway. It will be an absolute goldmine for all ICT contractors too this NBN.
Of course Ireland with its size should have an all island super fast network built years ago. But Ennis the information age town, last time I heard were still on dial up.
