Aussie Rules 2012

Havent been keeping up to date as much with the off season activities, but the 2012 AFL season gets up and running this Saturday with the new Greater Western Sydney Giants franchise playing the Sydney Swans. Game is live on ESPN, and it will be an absolute rout for the Swannies. No Irish involvement in the game, as O hAilpin and Walsh are recovering from injuries.

The start of the season and a lot of the Melbourne games will be heavily reminded about Jim Stynes passing this week. There is a tribute to him planned for the round 4 clash with the Bulldogs. It could be enough to spark a bit of life back into Melbourne who are steadily regaining ground lost over the last few years.

As for the season itself, Collingwood start off as favourites, despite their Grand Final loss to Geelong last year. Hawthorn are next, then Geelong, and the field spreads pretty wide beyond that.

My own thoughts are that I think Hawthorn could snatch it this year. They started poorly last year and got in gear then, only to lose out in a close tough game in the Preliminary finals. Rioli and Franklin staying fit are key, as well as Hodge and Mitchell. They have a strong tough squad, and brought in some really good young rookies last year, so I’d expect them to have good depth and

Collingwood have new management with Nathan Buckley, but they have a settled squad who are young and experienced. Marty Clarke has added some more depth to them and despite the management change, they should be strong contenders once again. But with Swan, Thomas, Pendelbury and Cloke, they have some formidable players who are game changers. Caolain Mooney has been making serious impressions since arriving too, but probably wont see action this year.

Geelong defy all odds. Despite a new manager and the loss of Gary Ablett, they showed huge ambition and drive to win last years comp. They again will be hard beaten, but its very hard to retain titles, and I think that will prove to be the case once again. Johnson, Bartell, Selwood again being their main men, with the likes of young players Duncan and Menzel chipping in.

Carlton keep flattering to deceive, and are a team that seem to always have depth, but still never push on over the line. With Murphy, Gibbs and Judd leading the charge through the centre, they still lack a potent goal kicker, and again it will be their downfall. Tuhoy should keep getting game time, but will be in the verge of squads.

West Coast should continue their improvements, but Le Cras gone for the year is a huge blow. Masten is also out injured for a while, and with a few other key injuries, I think their depth will struggle. Gaff will start more often, and Darling too and both will hopefully continue their steady rise, but I think they will find it hard to keep a top 4 spot, despite having the best rucking pair in Naitanui and Cox.

I think Essendon might push on a bit this year and finally click. They have the potential to win big games, and then lose out pitifully, but with a change in their management last year, they seem a stronger more solidified unit. Stanton, Zaharakis, with Hille and Ryder at ruck will be key, but the lack of a proven forward again will hinder them.

Sydney made a few nice moves in the off season, Walsh being one of them so it’ll be interesting if he can break through and make an impact. They have a solid if unspectacular midfield, and with Adam goodes and Ryan O Keefe leading them from midfield to attack, they have a decent chance. Sam Reid could be a main player if his goalscoring gets into form.

Melbourne will undoubtedly be spurred on by Jim Stynes and the season will be a dedication to him. It may be enough to propel them just into the top 8. They have a good young side, despite losing a quality player in Scully to GWS, and Liam Jurrah to maybe prison or being left out. He got caught up in an aboriginal family fued thing near Alice Springs and apparently took a machete to another man. Trengrove, Jones and Sylvia are decent players though who can lead the team to another level.

I think St Kilda have too good a squad not to be back making an impact. As much as Riewoldts kicking was utterly useless last year, he cant be as bad again. And With Goddard, Del Santo, and the return of Hayes, they should be better than last year. A change in management was needed.

Adelaide won the NAB cup, but its not something that should be used to gauge form. They were caught up in a racism recruitment scandal a couple of weeks back but media attention on it has dampened somewhat. They still have some quality young players in Dangerfield, Thompson, Van Berlo and Tippet, so they should be close to making the top 8.

I don’t like Fremantle, and I didn’t like their handling of sacking Mark Harvey and getting in Ross Lyons. They have some decent players, but lost Rhys Palmer to GWS. Fyfe and Pavlich with big Sandilands at ruck will be their main players, but I expect them to flatter to deceive, again.

North Melbourne are a typical mid table team. Never at the bottom, but not really challenging either. I cant see them doing much again this year. Brent Harvey is still going strong, which says it all really that a 33 year old is key to the side. They have a couple of good players in Swallow and Wells, but not enough to propel them into finals contention.

Western Bulldogs are an odd one. I had thought they would drop off last year, but not to the extent they did. They seriously went downhill, and I don’t see them improving that quickly. Boyd, Cross, Higgins and if Lake can return and stay fit will be key players. But it will take a lot for them to get back into contention again.

Brisbane seem to be making the right moves. They had some impressive performances last year, and Pierce Hanley was one of their better players too. McKeever also got in a few games, so would expect both to feature heavily again this year. If Brown can keep the opposition (and team mates) from shattering his face into pieces this year, they could push up another few spots. Rockliff and Redden will need to play well in midfield too for it to happen.

Richmond made some improvements, but I still think they lack leaders throughout the field. Reiwoldt up front is really good, and Deledio, Martin and Cotchin are decent players, but they lack depth and have a lot of gaps that need filling. They have some decent rookies it seems, but whether or not they can play at the next level is the question.

Port Adelaide are pretty much a shite team. There is nothing attractive about them. They have a horrible set up and play shite. Cassis, Boak, Gray are good players, but they are windy as fook. Only for the 2 expansion teams, I’d reckon they’d be last.

Gold Coast won a couple of games last year, and ran a few teams close before falling apart late on. Maybe the pace of the game started to tell, but a year on, they will have more experience, and for a young team, they showed some good promise. Gary Ablett is of course the star, but they have some decent players in Swallow, Rischitelli and Brennan. They should notch up a couple more wins again this year.

GWS Giants then will prop up the table. Again, it’s a bit of an unknown quantity, but I wouldn’t expect them to do much. A lot of rookies, mixed with a few older players who cashed in. Palmer, Power, Ward, Scully, Cornes and even O hAilpin was lucky enough to get a chance there.

Nice one Gman. With all the coverage of Jim Stynes it had got me thinking that the season wasn’t very far away. I just about to google it and your preview popped up.

Will be interesting to see what kind of crowds that Greater Sydney team pull in on a weekly basis.

Beat me to it GMan, I’ll post my thoughts this evening. Strange how they’re doing the first round, the Swans / GWS game tomorrow and the next game of the round isn’t until next Thursday.

Pearce Hanley among the best for Brisbane against Jim Stynes’ Demons. A fair oul rout in the end. Anyone know if TG4 will have the highlights show again this year?

One day soon I might get my act together and post a belated preview of the season.

A few results from Round 1 to note:
West Coast beating the shit out of the Bulldogs - Natanui as Full forward GMan? Your boys are loooking good. The Bulldogs are a bit of a joke now.
Fremantle beating Geelong - I wouldn’t take much out of this result, bad day at the office for the Cats, can the Dockers travel outside of WA?
Swans beating GWS - tells us precisely nothing
Brisbane beating the D’s - this wasn’t meant to happen in the week the D’s said farewell to Jim Stynes. Long season ahead for them, flickers of hope for the Lions. Pearse Hanley had a very good game, kicking 2 goals.
Carlton killing Richmond - Carlton are going to challenge this year, make no mistake. Richmond are not a very good footy team
Hawthorn beating the Magpies - Look, I know the Magpies have a load of injury problems, but this was a very significant result and a marker for the Hawks, who could well be the flag winners come October.
Adelaide Crows beating Gold Coast - I lost $20 on this and I’m pissed off (GC were at $3.45, which I thought was tremendous value). Crows are better than we thought, certainly better than last years disaster
Bombers beating (just about) North Melbourne - The Kangaroos are not a very good footy team. Essendon are not as good as James Hird would like us to think. I’d be astonished if either made the finals.
Port cunts beating St Kilda - it is now official that the Saints are the softest team ever to play Australian Rules football. A coupe of years ago, they were bolt on certainties to win the comp according to every pundit under the sun. And look where they are now, they have started this season by losing to Port fucking Adelaide, a horrible, horrible team made up of useless cunts. For shame St Kilda, for shame.

All I want for Christmas is for Tommy Walsh to start scoring goals for the Swans. From the accounts I have from people very close to the club, he’s not far off. Swans people are apparently very impressed with his application and potential, all see him as a superstar in the making for the club.

Setanta will be home in Cork before the end of the season.

a fair goal from Hanley. He played well, and so did McKeever too by all accounts. Wasnt expecting them to win to be honest, thought Melbourne would show a bit more toughness to be honest.

St Kilda losing and Geelong losing the 2 main shocks I suppose.

Nic Nat can play anywhere Fitzy. With him and Cox on rotation from ruck to FF, its an awesome combo. That goal Natanui got where he just sidesteps the dogs defender was class. He is far more than just a big guy catching a ball, he is a serious athlete.

Was very impressed with Freemantle saturday night, although they played a dangerous game defensively and could have been made pay for more of their cavalier defending (backs attacking at will). It wasn’t something people expected from Freo.

Freo are my team i’ve decided, its the most unique place in Australian and they have a nice working class support.

Freo is a decent spot once you’re not looking for the usual backpacker shite. Somewhere you could easily settle down I’d imagine.

Funny you say that, its where i’m moving back to when this gig is over. You’re right, as a backpacker its like anywhere else. But its got a real nice bohiemian feel and atmosphere to it generally.

What a fucking moron that lad is.

unreal. his documentary and book are just shams now in light of this. there was always rumours that he never got off the drugs at all, but to be caught with them shoved up your arse on the way to a drug rehab clinic. Idiot.

its a shame, because in many ways I had a lot of respect for him, but now, nothing. a career completley tainted.

Never realised there was a documentary. Looks a good laugh. Is it worth a watch, Gman?

yeah it probably is. goes through his life story, and has footage of him when he was at his worst. cameras followed him off season and he was doing drugs and shit with no hesitation.

but him pontificating about how he changed his life around and to use the doco as an example of how not to let things go bad just flies in the face of all that is known about him now.

His book is a good read too, but again, looks shit now that the outcome was a pack of lies. As a footballer and an athlete, he was iconic. As a person, he is a fucktard.

doco here: http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/207977893/?tab=summary

Never heard of him.

Need to start keeping up with this gentlemen.

Round 4 starts tonight with the grudge match everyone is waiting for, Freo V St Kilda.

I hope the Saints kick seven shades of shit out of Ross Lyons and his gimps (I really do Kev :guns: :guns: ). After a horror start loss to Port Cunts, the Saints have come back fighting, probably because their talisman leader Lenny Hayes is back, superb last week in their hammering of the Bulldogs. I predict St Kilda will murder the turncoats side.

Other games this weekend:

Carlton V Essendon - should be a cracker this. Carlton look very very strong and very fast this season and sit second on the ladder with 3 wins. Likewise, Essendon have started surprisingly well. Carlton to just nudge the win here.
Collingwood V Port Cunts - Carlton demolished the Magpies last week, they have serious injury problems around the park with Luke Ball, Heath Shaw and Dale Thomas out and rumours of disharmony and lack of confidence in Nathan Buckley. Bad start to the season for them, but they should have enough class to get over these no hopers.
Adelaide V Greater Western Sydney - Crows to win by a lot. GWS have signed Dermot Brereton (or the Derminator as he is now affectionately known) as a part time coach / easy money gig. Crows are going alright.
West Coast V Hawthorn - Game of the round, make no mistake. GMans boys are killing it this season, top of the ladder, but this is going to be their first real test against serious opposition. Should be a hard fought affair, with The Eagles home advantage a deciding factor.
Brisbane v Gold Coast - Big sports weekend in Bris Vegas with the A League grand final featuring Brisbane Roar on Sunday. Saturday nights AFL derby should be hard fought, but some relief for a Brisbane side getting kicked around the place a bit.
Geelong V Richmond - Did the Cats beat themselves last week, or were the Kangaroos actually good? A bit of both, difficult opening to the season for the Cats, adjusting to losses of some players, but still, James Podsiadly and Jack Hawkins are the leading goalscorers in the league. Richmond are amazingly one place higher than Geelong on the ladder. Not for long, expect to see the Cats take their frustration out on the Tigers in a big way.
South Melbourne V North Melbourne - Adam Goodes will play his record breaking 303rd game for the Swans this weekend. An absolute hero of course, a giant among men. We salute him as he marks this huge occassion. No doubt a runner for the Brownlow this year as well. Well, that was the script. The AFL fucked that up though when he was charged with rough conduct from last week and got a one match suspension. What a fucking joke. Now he’'l break the Swans record in Tasmania next week against the Hawks. This should be a good game that the Swans will win, but not comfortably. The good news is that Tommy Walsh is in the squad and could earn his debut AFL appearance.
Melbourne V Western Bulldogs - Well there had to be one bottom of the table clash and this is it. After 4 quarters of laghable footy, I’d expect the D’s to somehow win this, and the Bulldogs to wonder whether it was a good idea to treat Rodney Eade so badly.

Looking forward to Tommy Walsh kicking goals.

AFL is even less popular in Queensland than it was 10 years ago- joke of a sport

the 2 best players in AFL are ex rugby league players that were given huge contracts to switch to a sport they never played before

jo9ke

Jimmy Bartel and Dane Swan played rugby league?

Quick review of the weekends games in comparison to what I predicted:

Round 4 starts tonight with the grudge match everyone is waiting for, Freo V St Kilda.

I hope the Saints kick seven shades of shit out of Ross Lyons and his gimps (I really do Kev :guns: :guns: ). After a horror start loss to Port Cunts, the Saints have come back fighting, probably because their talisman leader Lenny Hayes is back, superb last week in their hammering of the Bulldogs. I predict St Kilda will murder the turncoats side. - Result - Fremantle beat St Kilda, who are crap really. Freo look well organised, nothing too flashy, not a great game.

Other games this weekend:

Carlton V Essendon - should be a cracker this. Carlton look very very strong and very fast this season and sit second on the ladder with 3 wins. Likewise, Essendon have started surprisingly well. Carlton to just nudge the win here.
Result - Bombers 109 Carlton 79, the surprise of the round, losing Carrazzo in the first minute hurt Carlton, but the Bombers killed them in the 3rd and 4th quarters. They’re a lot better than we thought, 4 games 4 wins.
Result - Magpies 97 Port Cunts 73 - Crap game, Magpies need to improve.
Adelaide V Greater Western Sydney - Crows to win by a lot. GWS have signed Dermot Brereton (or the Derminator as he is now affectionately known) as a part time coach / easy money gig. Crows are going alright.
Result - Crows 96 GWS 50 - GWS are getting close to winning a game, not a bad side, Folau scored a goal.
West Coast V Hawthorn - Game of the round, make no mistake. GMans boys are killing it this season, top of the ladder, but this is going to be their first real test against serious opposition. Should be a hard fought affair, with The Eagles home advantage a deciding factor.
Result - Eagles 51 Hawks 46 - A hard fought slog by all accounts, Eagles didn’t score a goal until the 3rd quarter, Daniel Kerr the main man for them. Big win against some peoples favourites this year, West Coast still on top of the ladder.
Brisbane v Gold Coast - Big sports weekend in Bris Vegas with the A League grand final featuring Brisbane Roar on Sunday. Saturday nights AFL derby should be hard fought, but some relief for a Brisbane side getting kicked around the place a bit.
Result - Lions 111 Suns 46 - nice shooting practice for the Lions to get tehir confidence up. Gary Ablett was injured, hopefully minor, as the Suns need him. They’re not very good.
Result - Cats 75 Tigers 65. Geelong made hard work of this.
Result - Swans 113 Kangaroos 77 - excellent win for the Swans, 4 out of 4, even without Adam Goodes. Louis Jetta with another 3 goals, 11 so far for the kid who couldn’t score a goal last year. Gary Rohan broke his leg though, a big loss for the rest of the season. Tommy Walsh was among the goals in a reserve game earlier and is very close to starting for the Swans
Melbourne V Western Bulldogs - Well there had to be one bottom of the table clash and this is it. After 4 quarters of laghable footy, I’d expect the D’s to somehow win this, and the Bulldogs to wonder whether it was a good idea to treat Rodney Eade so badly.
Result - Bulldogs 88 D’s 67 - hardly relevant really.

Round 5 starts on Wednesday with the traditional Anzac dat clash of Collingwood and Essendon.

Don’t have time to go through the whole round, but the bet of the round - Sydney Swans at $3.35 to beat Hawthorn in Tasmania.

Really you would have to go with the Hawks, unbeaten in Launceston, having beaten the Swans in their last 4 meetings. BUT, Hawthorn have had a rocky start to the season and Buddy kicked 1 from 7 last week. The Swans have won all four games so far, but against inferior opposition. However, if any team can stop the Hawks fast flowing kick passing game, its the equally hard working Swans. They lost Gary Rohan to a horrible broken leg last week, but there are players like Lewis Jetta stepping up to the goal kicking role and a player like Kieren Jack revels in games like this. The big thing though is that Adam Goodes will break the club appearance record this weekend and the team will be ready to kill for him.

I thought the Swans would be about $2 - $2.50 to win. $3.35 is crazy odds, I’ll definitely be having a piece of it.
