Aussie Rules 2013

Only 2 biggish games this week.

Collingwood and Swans tonight. Timmy Walsh dropped immediately, bit harsh in ways, no doubt other players get a bigger chance to shine than him. The miss kick was unlucky in ways, but when you look at it objectively it was rushed and shocking technique, he clearly thought he was on a Garlic field.

If Collingwood win this you would have to say they are back in the running. Swans are rarely poor twice in a row, but this would be 3 games in a row. They were good at times last week but should not have left Freo back for a draw.

Richmond and Essesdon is the other big one, another Essesdon loss on top of their CEO going yesterday and 2 losses in the bounce. I suspect Richmond will win and Essesdon will have collapsed for a 3rd year straight.

I’ll go with

Collingwood
Richmond
Geelong
West Coast
St. Kilda
Carlton
Hawthorn
North Mel.
Freo

Swans fairly kicked the shit out of Collingwood anyway. Brilliant performance, their distribution and speed of attack from defence was excellent.

but the main story will unfortunately be about the young one who racially abused Adam Goodes near the end of the game. Was fairly obvious, particularly because Goodes went back a couple of times to point her out, and the crowd were booing her as the stewards led her out. And to make it worse, was this was the opening game of indigenous round, celebrating the native Australian and their culture, and this fat cunt thinks its alright to scream abuse at him because of the colour of his skin.

It goes in everywhere GMan. Chance Bateman was abused by another WAFL player recently in front of me, Chance ignored it and nothing was done about it, but then again WA is the most racist places I have ever been.

Think this is 3 games out of last 4 Collingwood have had incidents and there has been a few ejections in recent times, which in itself is good as it means its people in the crowd exposing a minority.

Most Aussies seem to hate Collingwood, it has Irish roots and Many supporters traditionally came from an Irish slum back in te day. No surprise really as ex patriot irish throughout the 20th century were pretty racist.

Girl was 13. She probably heard whatever she said from her auld lad or uncle or something. Have to feel sorry for her, the whole of Australia is in her back. She couldn’t really know what she is saying.

What did she say?

Black cunt I think was used. I don’t have the full transcript yet.

Something you might hear all too commonly around the world. Hard to have sympathy for anyone saying that but you don’t want to be hanging a 13 year old girl just because she was on camera. Obviously right to be ejected it whatever but highlighting the incident too much in the media (apart from TFK of course) might be too much.

Did you ever read A Secret Country by John Pilger by the way? Read it a few years ago but I imagine it’s still hugely relevant.

Ya, on your advice I read it actually.

In fairness the AFL are trying hard to rid itself of any racism and I think there is a maturing slightly more educated generation emerging in Oz in general. But there is still a “our ancestors came here to get us this land and it’s our land”.

Around Perth you regularly see car stickers stating “fuck off we’re full” or “if you don’t like us fuck off”. Recently I saw one though in response, with a silver fern in it, “too late, we’re here already”!!! I like that one.

From the little time I spent there, Melbourne and Sydney are pretty tolerant, multi-cultural places in general.

she didnt call him black cunt - it would be unbecoming of a teenage girl to use the C word

the Irish use the term immigrant not ex pat- you’re not from Finchley mate

She called him an ape. You would imagine she didn’t fully understand what she was saying and would’ve heard it been shouted by someone else before.

I was at the match and there was an incident close to me where a fight broke out and a couple of lads got kicked out. I am going to day without any evidence whatsoever that it was Collingwood fans causing the trouble. They are really quite hated over here.

On a side note. 65,000 people at the game and absolutely no atmosphere. You could hear a pin drop from 3rd quarter onwards. That’s the 3rd or 4th game I’ve been to and each one very forgettable experiences. The crowd seem to get more entertainment from catching the ball after a goal, rugby-style tackles and the fuckin ‘smile cam’ between each quarter.

I have tried numerous times to get into this sport but keep coming to the coclusion that AFL is shit

Ape ?

Pretty insulting/disgusting, bit more specific in racist terms as well, clearly something she heard at home.

Yes TASE, a fucking dreadful prediction list. Thank god I don’t waste money in that shit any more.

The reason AFL really is inferior to Gaelic or Soccer is is the lack of creativity. They are all over coached. I asked a question recently why when in near the goal square and a straight in kick is not on why don’t they try to kick it back over their heads facing out wrong way. To me in this position it’s a calculated risk better than been smothered. Anyway the answer was “we were never shown how to do that” & “Damo (coach) would freak out if we tried that”. That’s the major problem, they are coached within an inch of their lives and the coaching style here is often one of fear. I have seen Indigenious players down the pecking order due to their inability or want not to play completely to structures. These are the most exciting and creative players in alot of cases. The high catching is a rarity as well and even the hardness of the game is being diluted as well.

Another issue is their inflexibility on fitness results. If a guy can’t do a 3Km under 11 minutes he forgotten about.

It’s still a good game, and can be quite exciting, just too much of an emphasis on fitness and structure.

just been reading a few bits and pieces, and its mad the extent of excuses being made. Fair enough, she is 13, but to be honest, if my daughter at 13 shouted that kind of crap at a game, I’d be disgusted at myself that something like that could happen. You make reference to it Kev, but it does show the level of tolerance there is to causal racism in Australia. I think its shocking that a 13 year old girl would think that shouting ape at an Aboriginal player would be considered run of the mill barracking. And it seems it was her grandmother was beside her, who just let her leave and be escorted out by stewards and wouldnt even go with her. I’d feel sorry to an extent, but not that much.

Some are questioning that using the term ape isnt actually a racist comment, as in ape means a big oaf or used in a joking manner. some are blaming Goodes, in that he should have ignored it and he publicly shamed a teenager. and others are blaming the media, and whilst to an extent I agree, but at the same time this was a live event, where Goodes was involved in play and obviously stopped to point out something. people are interested in knowing why he stopped. I was even wanting them to show the crowd as you could hear them booing when the stewards were going down. I doubt they realised it was 13 year old until after the event.

Its just a huge shame it happened in the week it did. They have been going on about the Nicky Winmar incident all week and the whole weekend, and how it was a game changer and how he was being racially taunted by Collingwood fans. And here we are, 20 years on, and it doesnt seem like it was a game changer at all.

Ya, it’s a poor reflection on Australia, one that it happened and two that they have gone into denial mode and some even to blame the guy who was taunted.

The grandmother probably said it earlier in the night when he wasn’t there, and she repeated it.

They say they don’t have a problem with racism yet they spend millions trying to fix a problem they don’t have. Jokers.

Gold Coast making a real game of it with Hawthorn, 17 ahead in 3rd 1/4. Upset of the decade type stuff

This is mild, but really typical of Oz.

The Irish are a lot more racist than the Aussies. We treat travellors like shit

spare me the hand wringing

If non Caucasians took up the GGA we would see how racist the Gahliban are

Old.

Aussies are the most racist people in the world, as a nation. No other nation has the collective racism that exists here.

Of course this is something TASE privately agreed with me on. Just so we’re clear.
