The 2002 to 2008 Waterford had a piss poor defence who leaked goals like a sive. Limerick scored more goals in 2007 semi than they did for the rest of that year .
They would have been beaten by more than Lk in that final . If Lk took them for 5 goals , think what the Kk forwards would have done .
This is true
You donât win an All-Ireland with that full-back line.
Iâve always said it, if Limerick could score 5 against them; what would Kilkenny have done to them? They never had a good enough full-back line to win an All-Ireland. Declan Prendergast was a decent hurler but a top-class full-back he was not.
Donât be wasting your breath gents. Waterford wonât win an All Ireland in my lifetime. As soon as ye read my death notice though, charge.
In 2002 Clare beat them with a sloppy goal
In 2004 there conceded 3 goals in first 15 mins or so to Kk and these were preventable . They scored no goal.
In 2006 again conceded a sloppy goal v cork . Should have been cleared.
In 2007 they conceded 5 to Limerick and 4 to a depleted cork in Munster semi.
To be fair their forwards were great to watch.
Three to a depleted Cork in 07.
No decent keeper before Hennessy and no full back
2002 caught on hop by Clare
2004 Mullane suspended and a rookie on goal, still ran KK close
2007 the two games v cork took its toll before meeting limerick the next wknd more than complacency
I think 1998 was one that really got away too
Yes . 2001 too . Should never have lost to Lk after that start . I still think that was a great chance for Lk .
In 2004 the Waterford forwards struggled v an out of sorts Kk but Paul Flynn was utterly awesome .
Austin was looking very trendy in Croke Park yesterday alongside Anna Geary and Jackie Tyrrell at the launch of Littlewoods as an official GAA championship sponsor
Thatâs nonsense. Waterford scored 1-13 that day. 0-7 or 0-8 of it in the first 20 minutes. Youâre going to blame that defeat on their defence?
The goal was sloppy and handed the momentum to Clare. Brought all of the old self doubt back into focus for Waterford
I was at that Game. In fairness they were still on a high after winning Munster. I think the game to a certain extent just passed them by and by the time the eventually figured out it was an AISF the game was up
I still think 2004 was the one they left behind. If you consider the final that year
Mullane was a huge loss and they still came close enough.
The goal totally changed on flow of that game . It was huge TBH . The ball would have been cleared by Kk and the 21 would have been protected . Wd lost shape after that .
Ya but the forwards bar Flynn were average . Kk were poor that year TBH .
They were. Thatâs why Mullane was such a loss against KK
The reality is that while that Waterford team had some brilliant players [Ken, Tony, Eoin Kelly, Flynn and Mullane] the country fellas making up the rest of the team varied between the reasonable and the downright average. If any of the 5 aforesaid had a bad day or if they werenât playing we were in big trouble as we didnt have the strength in depth of good hurlers.
Excellent point. Ken was like a one man half back line at times with Bull Phelan (either very good or very bad) and James Murray beside him.
Austin has picked up the Munster U 21 Player of the Year award to add to his HOTY, YHOTY, All Star, U21 All Star and Waterford HOTY. Not to mention his Player of the Month awards for June and August and the several MOTM awards he picked up during the year.
That mantlepiece better be sturdy.
