[QUOTE=“Fitzy, post: 1156093, member: 236”]Chris Judd did his ACL over the weekend and has decided to retire. One of the greats of the last 20 or so years, twice Brownlow medallist. Hopefully he’ll spend more time with the kids now and we’ll see more of his deoightful wife, Rebecca.
So the AFL goes into its mid season weird period this weekend, with Adelaide, Western Bulldogs, Carlton (at last! Carlton supporters cheer), Richmond, Brisbane and Hawthorn all having the bye this weekend. Be aware that for the next 4 weeks, the round starts on a Thursday.
TFK Round 10
Port Adelaide V Geelong - Port by 14
Gold Coast V Fremantle - Fremantle by 35
West Coast V Essendon - West Coast by 27
North Melbourne V Sydney - Sydney by 29
Collingwood V Greater Western Sydney - Collingwood by 11
St Kilda V Melbourne - St Kilda by 17
It actually should be a very good game and much better than the Carlton borefest we have been treated to on Friday nights for most of the season so far. 9th against 10th, Port are getting better, Geelong showed last week how good they can be, but they’re very inconsistent. Hard physical match, wouldn’t expect massive skill levels, two teams trying to find out about themselves, it should be very close and competitive.
I am but a mere apprentice to those more knowledgeable on these matters labane, so I’ll refer you to page 3 of this thread, but for the sake of brevity, they’ve all gone home.
Are you not there watching it weekly? None of the younger lads who have gone there making an impression? Sad really you would think we would have a few good enough.
It’s incredibly difficult to break into an AFL team, there’s young lads from Melbourne who have played nothing else in their lives trying to get into second, third, fourth sgtring set ups all over the country. Irish lads have a number of disadvantages in coming over here, there’s a perception that they will take a lot of time and coaching investment to get them near to AFL standard, which is understandable. Why invest that when you have a ready made 17-18 year old who just needs ohysical development and has the skillset necessary already? For every Kenneally, you’ll have 20/30 lads who didn’t make it. A lot have flickered briefly in the last few years and then gone home, like Marty Clarke and this is counting against them as well as there is a feeling that they won’t last for a long time. I really can’t see any Irish lad doing exceptionally well in AFL in the future.
If there is any focus on looking at players from outside of Australia, it’s on recently arrived immigrants, generally from Africa who have athletic ability. There’s a growing number of Somalians on the books of Melbourne clubs for example.
It’s a bit mad really. My young lad played a U11’s football match against a Sydney team last year with three Somalian kids. They were clearly not 11, but no one knew their birth dates (apparently two of them are orphans). But they were a joy to watch playing football, incredibly graceful and fast and scoring goals from outside the box for fun.

No hands on them black lads all the same. You only have to watch the African Cup of Nations.
