Our man in Brazil is reporting that the plane which crashed was forced into a holding pattern by ATC after being refused permission to make an emergency landing. Was already flying over its maximum range and looks like it just ran out of fuel while circling.

Good question TSG. There are a number of factors that can influence this. As an expert in aviation I have always felt that altitude is critical in avoiding crashes especially with the ground.
