What can you say about the man that hasn’t already been said? A true legend. I’d compare him to Stephen Cluxton in the way he goes about his business quietly but so effectively. An England clean sweep for the first time since 1995 was always on the cards after Dublin’s All-Ireland success. Martin always loves his trips to Ireland. I think it’s fair to say we love having him here too. Captain of probably the most popular England team around in any game, sport or pursuit in my memory. But even Wolfie is having trouble with Scotty’s form at the moment. But have no doubt, it’ll only drive him on even more.

MARTIN Adams is basking in the glory of a World Cup clean sweep by England.

The legendary Deeping star and long-serving national team skipper enjoyed a great week over in the Republic of Ireland where our lads and lasses dominated.

England throwers captured every available men’s, women’s and youth title during a magical few days at Castlebar in County Mayo to complete only the second-ever clean sweep in the 18th staging of the World Cup. They were also behind the previous one back in 1995 when Adams made his playing debut, but this achievement is greater as there were no youth events back in those days.
Adams led England to the men’s team title (the fifth time they have taken that title under his captaincy) and roared to a third helping of World Cup doubles glory with Tony O’Shea at his side.

And Wolfie completed a fine week by reaching the singles final when he lost to England sidekick Scott Waites in the final.
Delighted Adams said: “We had a terrific few days and to come away with every available title is nothing short of fantastic.
“It is a great honour to play for your country and a wonderful feeling to enjoy success while doing it.”

Adams could be forgiven for being sick of the sight of Waites after the Yorkshireman ended his bid for an historic fourth successive Winmau World Masters crown earlier this month, but he was the first to praise the performances of his team-mate.

Adams added: “Scott was definitely the pick of our players. He is having a great time of things at the moment after winning the Winmau World Masters and the British Open in recent weeks.”

Waites also successfully threw the deciding leg as England beat Finland 9-8 in the team final. They had seen off Scotland 9-2 in the last 16, Canada 9-6 in the quarter-finals and Sweden 9-5 in the last four.

Adams and O’Shea combined to see off Swedish duo Johan Engstrom and Daniel Larsson 6-4 in the doubles showpiece before the local star went down 7-3 to Waites in the singles finale.

And it also proved to be a memorable week over in Ireland for March man Peter Melton - the England team manager.

Melton also oversaw the dominance of his nation in the ladies section - where Trina Gulliver and Deta Hedman mopped up the honours - and the youth bracket.

Melton said: “It was great to play a part in the greatest day in English darting history.”

The Zuiderduin Masters starts tonight. This is the last big event before the World Championship and is traditionally seen as the big “moving” event before as players find their form ahead of the big one. Or so you’d think, but history tells us the winner here has a similar fate at Lakeside to the winner of the Augusta par 3 competition at the US Masters.

I’m in no way comparing Zuiderduin to that though as it’s a fantastic tournament in its own right. 24 players are divided into 8 round robin groups of 3, with the winners advancing to the quarter finals. It’s a format that’s reminiscent of the 1982 World Cup in Spain, and I’ve no doubt the excitement levels this weekend will reach the heights of that magnificent game between Italy and Brazil. Socrates’s great goal in that match summed up the philosophy of Brazilian football, and this tournament sums up the philosophy of BDO darts. The joy I feel in my heart before a big tournament like this is similar to the joy Falcao felt when he equalised that day in Barcelona.

One look at the draw tells you that Group F is the “Group of Death” - the Silverback, Wolfie and "the Man from Nowhere" Alan Norris compete for just the one quarter final spot. I don’t need to tell you anything about the standard of this tournament other than that Martin Adams, the reigning World Champion, isn’t even seeded! That says it all. I’m tipping Norris myself. The most improved player on the circuit this year and a real dark horse. He’s my long range each way tip for Lakeside.

At the start of the year I said we’d see a fitter and more focussed Ted Hankey. I think that the Count has achieved this to a certain extent, but he hasn’t even qualified for this tournament. Therefore my start of the year prediction that Ted would win this tournament won’t happen. With the all round strength of BDO darts, I’m not overly surprised however.

It’s not just the men’s tournament that will be keeping the interest up - Group A in the women’s draw looks seriously tasty. Good to see Anastasia Dobromyslova back in top BDO action. I wonder will defending youth champion Jimmy Hendriks will be trying to nail the Foxy Lady in the bar afterwards?

Shocking news from Holland as my sources tell me that reigning youth champion Jimmy Hendriks has ignored the charms of Anastasia Dobromyslova and has instead made straight for Trina Gulliver, dragging her into a toilet cubicle.
