The traditional, original and best darts tournament kicks off this Saturday at the legendary Lakeside venue in Frimley Green. Others may bow at the altar of false darting Gods like Barry Hearn, the PDC and Sky Sports but there’s only one proper and authentic world darts championship and it’s commencing at the weekend.
Thankfully the BDO has retained darting aristocrats such as defending champion Ted ‘The Count’ Hankey and England’s greatest ever captain, Martin Adams, so the standard will be higher than the PDC equivalent, as always. Tony O’Shea is the top seed and Daryl Gurney will be carrying Irish hopes at the Mecca of darts.
I look forward to viewing Brian Woods’ trampy 17-year old daughter in her low-cut tops and admiring the bingo wings of Ted Hankey’s mother and the style and beauty of Sharon Adams. It promises to be 8 days of awesome arrows action and all that remains is for me to proclaim, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, LET’S PLAY DARTS.’

I’d like to see how Phil ‘The Power ’ Taylor would get on playing on the English county circuit. Truth is, he’d get beaten up a stick by the likes of Dave Chisnall and Tony West.
There’s nothing to touch it. The maroon blazers, the Chelsea Pensioners, the very best of order. The pictures of all the greats hanging from the hallway. Taylor, Barney, Bristow, Priestley, Part. The names synonomous with the famous old trophy.
Wolfie, the Count or John Boy walking victoriously into the bar to be met with a standing occasion and applause from all four sides of the room. Then in for a matey tete a tete with Bobby and Stubbsy and a pint or ten afterwards. “Ted played some laaaahvely dauhhts out there. But you strayed into the five too much, Ted.” “You let the crowd get to ya, you know that yerself Ted. Yer better than that, Ted”. “Yeah, yer right, Bobby, yer right, course yer right.” Real darts people. Down to earth, unpretentious, unnashamedly working class.
Can’t believe Stubbsy won’t be there this year. It just won’t be the same without him. I’m not sure the new presenter Colin Murray will be able to fit in like that. The gang has been split up. It’ll never be the same now.
Co Stompe knew the score when he switched to the PDC. If Stompe and his ilk think PDC is better, then by gosh that’s good enough for me…[/quote]
Co Stompe was an also ran in the BDO for years, yet now the former Amsterdam tram driver is taking the PDC by storm. Evidence, if any was required, that the BDO is streets ahead of its glitzy Sky Sports equivalent. BDO values substance over style.
