Best and Worst Places to go out in Dublin

It’s the location alright Farmer. The sun shines down on the pubs on that side of Grafton Street in the summer and so the choice is Kehoe’s, The Bailey or The Duke really. I’d class The Bailey in with the likes of the Dawson Street pubs and I prefer Kehoe’s than The Duke.

Maybe you haven’t been in a while, it’s called O’Donoghue’s at least a year now.

it will always be the thin moate to me.

I would say three years.

But you’re right - it’s a grand pub.

The Duke is my least favourite pub in Dublin. The Guinness is muck and there is a horrible vibe around it. Was in there recently with Clarkey and we were sitting right beisde the disabled jacks. When I say right beside it I mean if the door was left open then any whiff would be in your face straight away.

Sure enough some homeless wan came in, used it and left the door open and the whiff was overpowering. So we left.

Not the type of thing you want when you are paying a fiver for a pint…

I’d say the whiff of the homeless ould wan was enough without anything else.

A poll should be set up to try and determine the best place. One for regular pubs, one for late bars and clubs

I’d also like to mention the Kestrel House (granted not town but is still Dublin)[/quote]

I was only ever there once and I will never go back. I came back from the jacks, opened the door to go back into the bar, bumped into a randomer who was going from the bar to the jacks, I said sorry and he promptly told be to ‘get t’fuck out of the way’. The type of lad you wouldn’t mess with as well - probably some drug lord or something.

Then there was a guy thrown out the same night for something to do with drugs in the toilets.

In conclusion - a dive.

Im a fan after discovering the great darts team down there so it’s gone up in my estimation. Looks like you’ll be missing out on the Ball Ox pints in May there Farmer

Is there some pub on Baggot street now where you can pull your own pints? Just put the Credit Card in a slot and work away??

The Baggot Inn has that since it reopened last summer and is a decent spot. Was in there one Friday night in November and it closed early at about 11pm after a cracking fight up at the bar. In fairness it wouldn’t be that type of place usually though.

Any type of beer Bandage or is there just certain taps? What end of Baggot street is it on?

Last night involved two old favourites of mine. The Stag’s Head for a shitload of pints followed by Doyle’s to get messy. Two super boozers.

The Stag’s Head is another great shout.

This thing with the pull your own pints sounds deadly.

The Baggott Inn is up the town end of Baggot St, near the corner of Pemboke St. Or at least it used to be anyway.

It’s up towards the Stephen’s Green end of Baggot Street across the road from Doheny’s & Nesbitt’s. The way it works is there’s 3 or 4 big tables down at the back with the taps at them. Now I don’t know how many taps there are or what type and I presume you have to be in early to get one of the tables too. Apparently the taps are hooked up in such a way that it calculates your bill or something based on consumption. I was in there on my own for an afternoon in December (was on a course and told them I was needed urgently back in the office and went drinking like a loner instead) and there was nobody using them but I decided to just drink at the bar. I suppose the best way to ensure you get the tables is to take a half day and go there on the locko with a pack of mates or something.

Fully agreed the place is a fucking shithole!!

Best to go across the Walkinstown Roundabout to the Cherrytree!

Boo to the Cherry Tree
Boo to the Kestrel

Oh boo yourself!

The Cherrytree is even more of a shithole than the Kestrel, that’s not to say I don’t like it though.

Cherrytree looks kippy, but it has great guinness and respectable clientele.

Respectable is a push. I suppose when we’re there it drags the respectability stakes up an enormous amount. The Kestrel has a savage darts team though. Maybe I’ll get a Cherry Tree team going.

One thing that Jugs and I were recently discussing is where are the genuine midweek student nights these days? Obviously you can stumble into Copper’s or DTwo after a random midweek night on the lock and you’ll have a mixture of students and twenty-something workers. But where are the designated proper student nights similar to sayThe Palace was a good few years back? The key is to identify these and blag / force your way in and then act like a spoiled and pampered football player or something. Start burning 50 euro notes on the dancefloor and the best bit of young college ass in the place will be yours for a night of fun, friendship and maybe more.
