Best Ireland Football/Soccer team if the GGA didn't exist

Totally hypothetical and stealing with pride from a recent Second Captains podcast (cc. @Cheasty), what GGA players would make it as a full-time soccer player if they weren’t playing Gah? The chaps on SC were rattling off footballers, saying David Clifford actually played centre half at some stage but they saw him as a striker and they mentioned a rake off the Dublin team but I wouldn’t know them. What I do know is that back in the day I played soccer/football with Peter Barry with SKC and he was, hands down, the best player I shared a pitch with. He played centre half but he had everything, a class act.

Who in your opinion could make it in full-time football and what position. Remember is can be done!

Jack Byrne claimed in an interview that Cian Lynch was actually a better player than him at underage level before hurling took over.

He was mentioned on the piece. He’d be some box to box midfielder you’d imagine.

Fucking hell, are we in lockdown again?

None . If they were good enough to make it they would have … the problem is some gaa player has a kick around with a bunch of muldoons and because he stands out they reckon he’d have made it as professional footballer …

Not sure about Gaa players but ive heard both Dave Kearney and Cian Healy are savage footballers. Healy is a nifty winger type by all accounts.

That would be my take on it too. If they were good enough at it and it came down to that or GAA you’d imagine they have jumped at the chance to go professional at football.

I read Hutchinson turned down St Mirren and packed it up. He must have been good.

He’d draw parallels to Xherdan Shaqiri with that short, muscular frame.

“Better than Jack Byrne” is a fairly shit yardstick.

Didn’t Stephen Cluxton play a bit of soccer? Think @Little_Lord_Fauntleroy saw him play.

@Little_Lord_Fauntleroy swears by him.

Don’t most lads/lassies play GAA for the love of the game? In saying that, there’s many lady footballers that are going to Australia to play footie.
