John Walsh himself might be a good example. He was unreal that year for Kilkenny, never broke through at senior really. Still has time on his side, I guess.
Malachy gave a great display out in Ennis in a 21s Munster final. Ennis was packed that day. He stood up and was counted.
In 2014, he destroyed Tipperary in the first game playing as a corner-forward and was on the frees. He played wing-forward the next day against Cork, I think and did very well too. Think he also played midfield in Munster.
Then was moved back to half-back for the semi-final; they did a lot of tweaking with the defence but never seemed to get it right.
Michael “Bonnie”/“Bonny” Kennedy
He was blackguarded a bit in fairness to him. Even by Kiely, I remember a league game where he’d 2 points got in the first half and was doing well, Kiely obviously saw something he didn’t like, he got the curly finger and wasn’t seen in the league again
Kiely has done a lot for him on a personal level.
I’d have Bernard O’Brien on a different level altogether. Incredible minor.
Kiely is a good man.
Ger Maguire from Latin Cullen who played in my era known as “Jesus” as Nicky was “God”
Pa Bourke
Pat Tobin was one of the most skilful hurlers I’ve ever seen. He never really made it as a senior, was always seen as an impact player
And the brother Seanie, he half made it but then jacked in. Two really skilful players.
The other fella was probably the worst of them and got a way more game time
Mickey “Da” from carrigtwohill was a crying shame. Had it all.
They sobered him up for a year and Carrigtwohill won a county
Doubt Kevin got more game time than either being honest.
I don’t think he was ever going to make it in midfield ahead of Lynch & DOD honestly. Maybe as an impact sub as he was well able to pick off scores.
I was always surprised he never got a run at wing-back. Superb in the air, good distribution, good recovery pace… Kiely played him there in 2016 for the minors. There must have been some reason he never got a go there though.
I think both Pat & Seanie played enough Championship games to have made it. Pat had some big contributions over the years.
Pa O’Callaghan from Ballyhea more recently.
Eoin McCormack
I spoke to a fella a few years ago and it was out of shyness with him apparently. He found it tough to go up knowing noone
He is a selector in the senior set-up now. You get the impression that Joyce, Divilly and Donnellan, who all played with him at Jarlaths, still look up to him as a bit of a hero so twas no surprise when Joyce got him involved this year. Apparently he is a fairly sensible sort now as well.
Ah here. He totally overachieved to play in an all Ireland semi and get at least one senior medal.
