BMW PGA at Wentworth

Writing more about it over on the golfsite but Paul McGinley shot a bogey free -7 65 this morning to lie top of the leaderboard. Excellent.

That’s a bit out of the blue isn’t it? Didn’t think he was in much form.

Saw him playing in the flesh for best part of one round earlier in the year and he shot 3 under par that day. But sure it’s a 4 day tourney, long way to go yet. 65 a great score though. No dropped shots the key

I think the 7 birdies were the key to his 65 actually, along with 11 pars.

It’s got nothing to do with dropped shots.

Locke is wrong.

Dropped shots stop momentum in a round; key is to keep them off your card.

Locke is right

So Locke, what happened McGinley over the weekend?

I reckon he didn’t make enough birdies.

I bet you reckon he had too many of those damned dropped shots!

Surely, a player of his experience shouldn’t collapse like that over the weekend?

Double bogey, par, bogey, par, bogey start to his third round, ended up with a 79, came in with 41… just like he had a cracker of a game on Thursday and nearly matched it on Friday, the opposite happened to him the next day. A golfer will usually will usually find his level over the 4 days, give him a break. At least he knows that he can keep with his peers over 3 days, just needs to put Saturday behind him and take the positives.

On his BBC interview with Gary Lineker on Thursday Gary offered him another 65 and McGinley’s beloved Celtic to win the SPL that night; Paul said a 66 and Celtic to be crowned champs would be enough, he got his wish. Didn’t see it through though…
