Looks like poor oul Bob is on the way out fairly soon. A great character and one of the true gents in football.

Bobby Robson set to lose battle with lung cancer

Thursday August 07 2008

England football legend Bobby Robson has admitted that he is fighting a losing battle with lung cancer.

Robson, who was employed as a consultant by the FAI during Steve Staunton’s recent reign as manager, says doctors have told him he is unlikely to survive his latest battle with the illness.

“I have accepted what they have told me and I am determined to make the most of what time I have left,” he is quoted as saying this morning.

“I am going to die sooner rather than later, but then everyone has to go some time and I have enjoyed every minute.”

Sad news, I always liked Bob. Some great stories surround him.

Yeah one of the good guys in football alright. Shame he was associated with the dire run in Irish soccer recently but it wasn’t his fault.

Sad to here. A true gent of the game

A great man. And as rock said it was a pity he got caught up in the whole Staunton debacle.

I’ll never forget the day Joe Duffy exploited his illness on the airwaves after one of the losses. It was a disgrace.

What happened Runt?

It was after one of the internationals (Cyprus perhaps), and for some crazy reason Bobby Robson was on the show and obviously not in the best condition (stammering, mumbling, repeating himself etc). That cunt Duffy tore into him about the performance and Staunton etc, it was obvious from early in the “interview” that Robson shouldn’t have been on the air and was in capable of defending himself, but our hero Joe gave no let up and kept on at him. I really felt for him (Robson) that day.

Joe Duffy is a cunt.

Wait…

The FAI asked Robson to take the call instead of Staunton. Another masterstroke from the cunt that is John Delaney.

Robson seems a decent aul sort anyway. Never got names right (will remember him at newcastle talking about playing chelsea and drobda up front for them) but always knew what he was at. Good manager and decent man,

My favourite story regarding Bob is the one told by Shola Ameobi.

Ameobi was being interviewed by Garth Crooks for Football Focus when Ameobi was breaking through. Crooks asked Ameobi was he learning much from the great Sir Bob. Ameobi went on to sing Bobs praises.

Crooks then asked Ameobi did he have a nickname.

Ameobi said no.

Crooks said he must have a nickname.

Ameobi said no.

Crooks asked what did Sir Bob call him.

Ameobi said

“Carl Cort”.

Genius.

Heard the same story but thought it was David Platt asking Ameobi the questions at an England U21 training session!

Always had great time for Bobby, remember seeing a documentary on him when he was at Newcastle and he seemed like a genuinely decent bloke, totally at odds to the idiots he was managing at Newcastle like Dyer et al. When you see the state Newcastle are in now you have to admire what he did there.

Article from todays Times here, he doesn’t look great.

Sir Bobby Robson’s warm smile was unmistakable as he was made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Durham yesterday.

The former England manager took a break from his fight against cancer to accept the honour, attending the event at Durham Town Hall with his wife Elsie. His distinctive head of silver hair may have gone and his face may now bear the strain of battling cancer for a fifth time, but Sir Bobby once again captured the hearts of the people of his home city showing by showing that he hadn’t lost the glint in his eye.

The 75-year-old was given a standing ovation as the mayor Grenville Holland told him: “You are one of our own. We are proud to have you in our midst.” Describing him as “a great man and a local hero”, the mayor added: “Nobody is more deserving of the freedom of Durham than Sir Bobby Robson.”

The former Newcastle United manager, who is currently receiving chemotherapy for tumours on his lungs, was honoured in recognition of his services to football and his charity work, having raised more than 1million since he was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in 2007.

He was first diagnosed with cancer 16 years ago and despite his poor health, Sir Bobby remains in good spirits. Speaking at an event in Country Durham last month, he said: “I’m fighting, doing very well, I have some small health problems,” he said.

"A bit of radiation has resulted in me losing my hair. But I’m eating, sleeping and going to football I’m trying to get as much enjoyment out of life as I can.’

He began his football career while still at school in Langley Park, Durham. He signed to Fulham in 1950 and went on to play for West Bromwich Albion and England. As a manager he won the FA Cup with Ipswich Town before taking England to the 1990 World Cup semi finals. He was made a Freeman of Newcastle three years ago and granted the Freedom of Ipswich last year.

the lowlight being when Bobby Robson had to listen at length to that cunt Brush Shiels telling him where he was going wrong while Joe regularly reminded Bobby and listeners that Brush had played for Bohs. Brush, Duffy and Delaney, three cunts

A true gent…I have an uncle that used to live in Oporto and would often meet Sir Bob and he said that he absolutely lives and breathes football, would talk about nothing else…We could do with a few more characters like him around…

Fuck that prick Joe Duffy for slaughtering him on live-line…
