Bobby Sands MP - 30th Anniversary

I’d like to pay tribute to one of my heroes on this, the 30th anniversary of his passing.

A man who made the ultimate sacrifice in the hope of seeing his country united.

I’d appreciate it if those who have no time for Bobby or the cause just stays out of the thread and do not start slanging matches. Respect the dead.

Don’t know how to put up videos/songs on here, so if someone can put up Song For Marcella, Id appreciate it.

RIP Bobby

RIP. This is my favourite of all the hunger strike ballads. Think its the right link, don’t have youtube here.

If they aren’t able to destroy the desire for freedom, they won’t break you. They won’t break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show.

It is then we’ll see the rising of the moon.

The best that can be said is Sands and his cohorts were brave men for dying for their beliefs, albeit very misguided ones.

The fact that his former terrorist colleagues are today on the 30th anniversary of his death taking part in Assembly Elections in Northern Ireland really illustrates how futile and pointless it all was. Ultimately, the IRA and Republican movement was defeated militarily, accepted the partition of the island and dropped the constitutional claim in Article 2 & 3 by signing up to the Good Friday Agreement.

It would be remiss not to remember all the innocent and civilian fatalities during that particularly bloody period of early 1981.

A proper hero.

THE LEGEND

I went to see a legend just the other night
At the Yankee Stadium, underneath the lights.

And I heard an old man speaking after years and years in jail.
His name was Mandela and he came to tell the tale.

Well, the crowd they cheered him loudly, a but then the silence fell
As he spoke about his hard years in a South African cell.

And although he was free, well, his heart was still in pain,
For his country and his people were still a part of the chain.

He said he hoped that he would join us and we’d walk down freedom’s path,
And although these would be hard years, oh, but they would be the last.

And to join hands together so that we might be as one,
And to bring ourselves to the cause so our struggle might be won.

I went home to bed that evening, I fell asleep, and I had a dream.
Well, I dreamt that I was standing there in an Irish field of green.

And all around were headstones of the martyrs of the past.
There I stood in solemn silence, and they spoke to me at last.

“Kevin Barry is my name, I was tortured in a cell.
And they wanted the names of my comrades, oh, but this I would not tell.”

“And I am Roger Casement. I was hanged in London town
For bringing German rifles to the lonely Banna Strand.”

“James Connolly is my name. The working people are my life.
And then they shot me down in Kilmainham Gaol; that’s right.”

“And I am Padraic Pearse. I was shot down by the foe.
For I read the proclamation on the steps of the GPO.”

Well, the last voice that I heard says, "My name is Bobby Sands,
And it’s good to hear Mandela’s voice is ringin’ through our land.

“I want to hear them in Belfast, in Derry and Tyrone.
It’s maybe then those English soldiers will know it’s time to go home.”

I awoke then from my dream. I remembered them all.
And who would believe that they could knock down the Berlin Wall?

And I said, “O Mandela, can this really be?
Maybe now we will see Ireland reunited and free.
Maybe now we will see Ireland reunited and free.”

That’s some list of Irish heroes… Connolly was scottish, Casement a rampant homosexual who took advantage of young blacks when he was a diplomat for the Crown in Africa… Pearse was also a homo who confessed in his diaries that he was attracted to young boys.

You’d have to admire Sands’ stance but he was obviously misguided and deluded…

Couple of things for you mate:

  1. The civilised world has moved on from describing homosexuals as “rampant”
  2. Mandela wasn’t Irish either

A Glasgow football supporter preaching about the civilised world

To be fair, CM was way down the betting to be the first to ignore TDB’s original post.

he died for politcal status- the fact that his former terrorst colleagues are on the verge of being the largest party in the north shows that his legacy is pretty damn strong

A courageous and fearless man who inspired an uprising in the fight for freedom. Hopefully for Bobby and the many men like him who have given their lives before him, we may one day fulfill his dream.

As db requested.

Cheers Mr Totti - great tune for a great man

Why is Sands remembered more fondly than many of the other deluded men who starved themselves to death for freedom? He was well down the pecking order in the IRA at the time.

Hunger strikes were the Irish version of suicide bombers. Although Adams did convince one of those aswell. Starving yourself to death is pointless, life should be more precious than that imo. Its a seperate issue but any analysis of Easter 1916 would come to the same conclusion.

hard to know what his legacy is, Adams practically later abandoned the blanketmen in his own ruthless drive to power in the republican movement. The death of Sands may have convinced him that there was more power in the pen than the bomb but it took a long time for that to come to fruition. For a republican like Sands, with the border entrenched 30 years on, I doubt he would have been happy how it all panned out either. The IRA never wanted peace or civil rights and the continuity of British rule in Northern Ireland continues with no end in sight.

Bobby Sands. Fucking terrorist.

No fear of you starving yourself anyways

Of course not, 10000 calorie a day diet will keep me going.

Are you planning on starving yourself?

Amazing how some jumped up privaliged kid from West Clare who grew up in the 90’s & 00’s knows what Bobby Sands would have wanted now or the reasoning behind him making the ultimate sacrifice. I get the feeling KIB wouldn’t give up a seat on a bus for an old lady not to mind have an understanding of sacrifice. Cunt.

CM & Manuel are also cunts for not just leaving well alone as thd asked for. Some people.

Give his seat up, sure that’s just stupid. And a bus, who the fook would use a bus, peasant way to travel.
