If Paddy Power shut their high-street shops, it wouldnāt be any great loss to most of us. The only real downside is that itād hand Boylesports a complete monopoly, which would be a disaster for competition and value.
Ever since Paddy Power merged with Betfair and became part of Flutter, the whole operation seems to have changed. Their margins have worsened, their prices are rarely competitive anymore, and their attitude towards the ordinary on street punters has gone completely downhill. They used to be sharp, you could get a fair bet on and theyād stand their ground, but now itās clear their only interest is in hoovering up a load of mugs online.
So while theyāre no great loss to the high street, their departure would still spell trouble. Once Boyles are left with no real competition, the game will be gone and for punters like me who only deal in cash over the counter, thatāll be the end of it altogether.
