I see the Tories are saying no economic analysis needs to be done on this “deal”
Standaard enough right wing insanity, I’d have thought
It doesnt matter now Sid. Opposers to the bill will tie it up in knots for months. There will be proposed amendments and amendments to amendments.
I’d have thought in a normal society it would matter that a government is trying to bounce a crazy bill through parliament without even doing any economic analysis
Britain isn’t a normal society though
The actual Brexit secretary didn’t even know that the red tape* businesses will face for moving goods from Britain into NI will also apply the other way - he said in a committee hearing that it wouldn’t - that’s the level of arrogance, incompetence and idiocy that we’re dealng with here
Hilary Benn has now pinpointed exactly why the ERG supported this “deal”
It’s because parliament cannot bring a motion to extend the traansition period
The whole thing is a back door to no deal
*I generally abhor the term “red tape” but this is an example of where it is accurate, as are all unnecessary rules and regulations introduced by Brexit, they’re “red tape” precissely because they’re completely fucking unnecessary
Be interesting if the EU came back at the end of the month and said look lads, we’ll extend for a year. In the meantime get yere shit together and have a general election and or a second referendum. A risky tactic for remainers but might be worth it
The EU will keep rolling over the extension for as long as is necessary
I see Labour arch-Brexiteer Caroline Flint was recieving money from a right-wing pro-Brexit lobby group, and is a member of a right-wing pro-Brexit think tank, as are Kate Hoey and Stephen Kinnock
Weird that, and how amazing that Caroline hasn’t been asked about that
There are some seriously murky connections here
Flint’s interview on C4 News this evening was a disgrace - she is increasingly becoming indistinguishable from UKIP
Kinnock is weird. Hated by the Corbyn wing and a complete moron on Brexit, doesn’t seem to want to ingratiate himself with anyone.
He needs to fuck off and get a part in the next series of Borgen
That’s his level
His political career should stand him in good stead for acting, he won’t need any classes
He can’t call an election.
Vote of NC in his own govt. Would be epic. Deal will pass

The only way he can do it. If King Bercow allows it of course.
I’m giving that a like.
I’m giving it a wipe.
Sinn Fein: united Ireland poll could happen in five years
Sinn Fein vice president Michelle O’Neill has suggested that a border poll on Irish unity is likely to happen within five years, due to Brexit upheaval, the Press Association reports.
O’Neill said polls show the necessity for debate and planning to begin on preparations for a border poll, and then beyond that to a united Ireland.
Sinn Fein have said they want a border poll on a United Ireland within five years, but O’Neill said Brexit could see it happening sooner.
Speaking in Dublin, she said the collapse of the Berlin wall and subsequent reunification of east and west Germany shows that major political events such as Brexit can speed events up.
Everything is moving in that direction. I believe it was moving there even before Brexit, but clearly Brexit has become a catalyst for it. What is important to note is the German example. I think with the Berlin wall, Germany was reunited within a year … the fact that events overtook and the country was unified within a year.
Sinn Féin Vice President Michelle O’Neill says while they want a poll on a united Ireland within five years, the fall of the Berlin Wall shows unity can happen sooner than expected.
Difference being I’d imagine most of old East Germany were in favour of reunification? Unlike the north, and the south.
I think from a Remainer point of view the Letwin Amendment is a strategic mistake. There’s now a deal that both the EU and the UK government are happy with so what’s an extension going to achieve? The only reason an extension makes sense in these circumstances is if you want to delay any Brexit completely, without having a second referendum.
I also don’t see anything wrong with Johnson sending the letter and then telling the EU that he only sent it because he was required to by law and not to take it too seriously. That seems reasonable to me and I think the public won’t be impressed by the Remainers making a song and a dance about it.
I think the British public were mostly pretty happy that BJ had made some progress and now parliament comes across as being contrary and obstructionist. It plays perfectly into the Johnson/Cummings narrative of the People vs Parliament.
As you said the UK is a paradox. Where else would a vote on a deal be prevented by a lad who’s role is to maintain order in the House invoking a rule from 1604?
Michael Collins quoted verbatim just now. Mental.
