To which I say, by way of cheer:
Barnier has told the British that they leave the Backstop for the U.K. as a whole (which the UK requested themselves) so long as the remainder of the backstop remains.
I don’t have a clue what that means ?

The UK requested that the UK as a whole would remain in the customs backstop. This was a concession that the EU made to the U.K. The EU are now telling the U.K. that they can unilaterally withdraw from the part of the backstop they requested.
Simple.

I keep thinking of the scene in Michael Collins where Harry Boland is pleading with him “This gives up the north…”
This was the deal as it was structured originally. The DUP went mad that the North was being abandoned and to placate them the backstop was extended to the rest of the UK. The EU didn’t give a fuck one way or the other so they agreed.
Now the UK want to renogiate their own position back to where they were originally and again the EU don’t give a fuck and are happy to switch back.
The Brits will try to claim this as a win.
The DUP have been betrayed.

In a forthcoming film, Liam Neeson will play Nigel Dodds. The plot is that Dodds walks around the streets of London for a week looking for an EU politician to murder, any EU politician will do.
At the end of the week he repents and realises the awful nature of his thoughts, and just reverts to his usual bigoted rhetoric.
