I suspect, however, that if ireland had been net financial donators from day 1, rather than huge beneficiaries in every way, Ireland would probably have voted to leave also, given how quickly anti eu sentiment has swelled in the past whenever Ireland feels hard done by. 30 odd million voted to remain despite the lies, disinformation and abject lack of leadership. Always worth bearing that in mind. Anyhow.

That seems to be the fundamental misunderstanding of the EU. We put X in and only get Y out. Therefore we are not getting good value for money.
Most of the best things about the EU can’t be quantified. The huge benefits of being part of one of the Worlds largest trading blocs in negotiations for example. The peace it’s brought to Europe etc. etc.

Ye’re a bit late with this, Macron and a few more got there months ago. Ireland will always want to leave the door open for them to stay in, but for France and a few more the messaging now is that the only thing worse than a hard brexit is no brexit.
They have been shepherded and ushered along up until now and will continue to be. There’ll be a managed exit, there won’t be a hard brexit. The only way they can avoid that is another referendum where they vote remain.
I think that the pressure that Macron is now under from Le Pen might mean that he needs to make an example of the Brexiteers.
