Kerry had nice players but in the white heat they couldnât perform, that Tyrone side at the very least could match for talent but they couldnât turn it on in the white heat like Tyrone could.
The Kerry players were show players in contrast, Canavan v Gooch is the greatest example. Canavan found another level when teams tried to get at him, Gooch wilted.
Canavan was better than Gooch but I think Gooch was better than the rest. Declan o sullivan better than mcguigan for eg. Brolly was thrones biggest fan and predicted they would win in 08 before game and at half time but he was certain kerry had the better players individually. I think that makes their three wins all the sweeter. It must be the sweetest and most sickening rivalry in gaa history. 3 wins to nil and big underdogs every time. Add in the puke football comment and its unreal
08 is a different story. Canavan had retired, OâNeill had only come back before the final after serious injury problems, McGuigan started on the bench after big injury issues in the previous two seasons. Mulligan was badly out of form.
Tyroneâs starting 6 forwards that day if memory serves me correctly were.
Yeah it was very weak on paper. Youâre right throw mcguigan mulligan and canavan in there it matches up v favourably with say galvin o sullivan brosnan Cooper Donaghy t walsh. Darren o sull sheehan Mike Frank in reserve. Still think kerry would have slightly the edge individually over the field 9 to 6 or 8 to 7. It certainly does not matter a fuck though and as I said makes it all the sweeter Tyrone beat them every single time they played. Iâd say it haunts the kerry lads.
