Not sure which of the Official Lions threads to be posting this in, so I’ve just posted it in both! Gerry Thornley getting very animated by this issue of the name.
Lions Diary - Gerry Thornley - Irish Times 15 June 2013
LIONS RENAMED AND REZONED
One of the more irritating occurrences of Lions tours is the occasional references to them as British Lions rather than the British & Irish Lions. Clive Woodward was a repeat offender in 2005. If in doubt, why not simply the Lions.
The Waratahs have, in fairness, been the most open and helpful of any outfit to date on this tour, granting access to coaches and players at the end of Wednesday’s open session. However, the press release accompanying their team announcement yesterday rather took the biscuit as it wrote of “NSW looking to record their first win over Great Britain (sic) since their 18-14 victory in 1959”.
To err once could be forgiven, but later in the release it read “The rivalry between NSW and Great Britain dates back 125 years to the teams 'first meeting at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 2 June 188 when NSW lost 2-18.”
Oh well.
What sort of sh*te is that from Scruff Thornley. The Lions represent the British Isles - hence they’re the British Lions.
Big game for the lads this morning. The controversial one day tourist Shane Williams will need to hit the ground running or else this entire tour come become a giant laughing stock, and I think we can all agree, thats the last thing any member of the British Isles wants. I must agree with Woody however, who railed against this selection on Newstalk last night, Woody understands the Loins ethos better than anyone, his family are steeped in it, and Woody knows. Woody knows.
Gats is in danger of seeing this tour spiral out of control, and you must begin to question some of his selections now. I realise people may view this as being very “un British Isles” of me to do, but if the Loins has taught us anything, (and its taught the entire Isles many many important lessons) its that we must not blindly follow, we must be brave, we must be strong, and we must be true to ourselves, and when we feel the need, we must roar. Well I am roaring now, and should I be proven wrong, then so be it, but I think Gatty has gotten this entire thing wrong and instead of handing out a sound thrashing to this shower, we may only just scrape by them now. The captain was wrong, the make up of the squad was wrong, and I always fear for a tour that doesn’t have a Telf or a Geech involved.
There, I said it. The blood has been splashed on the walls, and now we fall in behind then Loins once more.

There will always be disagreements and this is a healthy part of the expeditiion. But there’s a reason why the commander-in-chief of the expedition is the commander-in-chief.
In Gatty we trust.
I’m hugely, hugely excited by this morning’s back line.
Simon Zebo must have an outside chance of a place on the bench this Saturday?
I thought he played really well on Saturday.
The insistnce on calling the Lions the British and Irish Lions is a bit tedious at this stage, they were alway the British Lions when I was growing up. The NSW press release was quite correct too as Ireland didn’t even exist outside of a UK context when the Lions concept was started.
Thornely is a gas man in that respect. He’s the sort to sneer at someone in a Celtic jersey whilst getting all patriotric over a nonsense issue like this. Cheap patriotism is all that is.

People from Dunboyne, Maynooth and Bray don’t object to the term “Greater Dublin area”, and insist on it being called the Greater Dublin, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow metropolitan area. It would be plainly ridiculous. It’s the same with the British Loins and any ridiculous idea of a name change. It will always be the British Loins.
A bad start from young Wade as his defence is badly exposed for a Brumbies try. The Kearnivore won’t be ecstatic either.
