British Loins Tour to New Zealand 2017 - Official Thread

You’d think so alright.

He has access to some outstanding players though.

Stuart “Barnesy” Barnes referenced Chris Ashton as a possible “Bolter”.
Wonder will Gatty give it consideration

He does. The 05 squad was utter shit as you mentioned.

Is it fair to say that with lads getting injured between tour starting and ending approximately 45 players will have been on lions tour?..that’s out of 4 teams - ireland, england, scotland, wales…15 on a team …so basically 15 starting players don’t make the squad?

Had a look there at the wasps match.

For a lad who has played a handful of big games, carbery is like the second coming of Gibson.

The king used to say if he touched a ball twice in a move, his team scored. Three times and he scored. Carbery put me in mind of that setting up conan for the try.

If schmidt was coach, he’d nearly travel.

Yeah. Sensational talent. Load of Cork lads play up in clontarf and I’d been told he was several notches above AlL so was keeping a good eye on him when he came through at start of season. Definitely full back is his better position for now keep him out of heavy traffic. I am looking forward to seeing him being put under lot of pressure by a top class backline see how he gets on.

He is top tryscorer in pro12 even after missing 10 weeks or so through injury

40 maybe will tour and probably 90 different players would have started a 6 n game. But yeah anyone decent has fair shout of going. But of Irish players realistically Heaslip, D Ryan, Toner,Jackson Payne ringrose Zebo earls Kearney scannell marmion etc would all have started games and probably won’t go. They are all decent players some well above average quality

The last thing Carberry wants is a trip on the Lions. Nearly destroyed Earls

Agreed. He has no chance of going anyhow.

Gerry Thornley has published what his touring party would be, in today’s paper of record.
Gerry had selected 4 Irish players in his back row selection.

Gerry hasn’t a bog.

Bits and pieces of squad news being leaked Kyle Sinckler looks to be in despite never starting for England actually saw him play Friday night for Harlequins he was outstanding.

Henderson and Ben teo also look like they will get in. That kills off any small chance ringrose may have had I guess

I see in 1936 the Lions Toured Argentina. Can either of you ever envisage a reoccurance ??

Full tour? Doubt it. Doubt they could provide the commercial revenue required or but game is struggling in Oz so who knows. Would be brilliant. Would be about the only thing that might get me interested again.

I was thinking on similar lines but the game is really struggling in Oz and SA rugby is not looking great either.

He just made that point

I added the bit about SA to show that the Lions might need new horizons . If there comes a time that only NZ is viable for a tour then options are required.

Sigh.if the ARU are struggling the British lions will never stop going

SA will probably be ok just v poor management at moment from tip to bottom but playing and support base is there. Medium term quite possible they would look to get into European tournaments, Super rugby is broken and only works for Kiwis now.

Argentina would be a brilliant touring location but hard to see how they would pad out the schedule outside of the tests. One Super rugby team could maybe include few overseas club sides to make it work. Saw argies draw with lions in Cardiff in 05 in a tour warm up was close to sold out on a Monday or Tuesday night.

Lions is not far off a busted flush though really. Tour too long. Too much stretch for players to squeeze into already full calendar. Wait and see the state they come back from NZ in. Will write off next season for lot of players. Even mid week games will be serious struggle this time I think. I’m looking forward to the games but the hoopla and the subsequent toll on players is just not worth it. I’d be happy enough if no Munster players were picked

Why do you say Super Rugby is busted Dan?

No crowds, interest declining massively outside of NZ. Positive move bringing in Japanese and Argie sides but will take years for the Japanese to become properly competitive. Overly complicated competition structure due to number of teams. Too much travel. Not bringing anything like the money into the game to keep best players in Oz and S.A. who are in process of cutting 3 teams.

Still some top quality games but an awful lot of scutter. The NZ sides would be excellent in Europe the Oz sides wouldn’t be competitive in European cup and only few of S.A. teams would.
