THG proving why he is the best keeper in the world

cracking game between Inter & parma at the moment

3-2 at HT

5-2 now

Magnificent goalkeeping from the holiest of them all.

Some sensational saves in that. A trademark star jump to stop the 1 v 1 from Iaquinta and the one down at the post where he injured his shoulder was as good as you’ll see. He was very good in Milan last week too but obviously didn’t stand a chance with Zlatan’s outstanding overhead kick. But it was nice of him to oblige us Roma supporters with a gaffe for the third goal in our recent 3-2 victory against them.

I enjoyed these articles as a step back in time to the halcyon days of Serie A

Would any of ye care to post up your Serie A dream team XI to pass a slow friday?

Donadoni was shit

A very quick stab at it, am gone most of the day but a great way to spend a long Friday! Mainly based on the early to mid 90s or so.

Manager:
Sacchi
*Lippi / Capello / Ancelloti
Nod goes to Sacchi. I still think that Milan team assembled during the first half of the 90s was the best team ever. Maybe it is rose tinted glasses and fond remembrance of past years, but that was a savage team. I’d be close to just picking a Milan 11 here. Capello maybe needs credit for pushing on that Milan team and keeping that momentum, but either way, serious managers. Ancelotti was the brains behind that fantastic Parma side of the time too.

Pagliuca
*Rossi / Zenga / Buffon
Hard to pick between the 3. Rossi I dont think ever got the plaudits he deserved. Pagliuca I always felt was a fortunate keeper, always had luck on his side and had some miraculous saves. And Zenga was a pure leader and horse of a keeper. Buffon peak time was more in the 00’s than 90s. Probably go with Pagliuca as he was the form keeper of the time

Thuram / Baresi / Costacurta / Maldini
*Nesta / Cannavaro / Bergomi / Tassotti / Cafu / Ferrara / Zanetti / Vierchowod

Probably going to be the hardest line to pick on a best of Serie A team. Absolutely class defenders. My own Milan bias nearly had me pick Tassotti there with the best back 4 that ever played on the one team. Some unbelieveable defenders have played in Serie A and the 90s was surely peak of that with some of the best in the world in Serie A at that time.

Desaily / Del Piero / Zidane / Rijkaard
*Albertini / Nedved / Rui Costa / Effenberg / Boban / Veron / Gullit / Fuser / D Baggio / Matthaus / Davids
Hmmm. I thought the defenders would be the hardest line to pick. Those are probably my favourite midfielders rather than a midfield quartet that would fit a side. Desailly and Rijkard similar in style of play and same with Zidane and Del Piero. Fuck it, we’ll defend hard and attack hard and fuck playing the wings. Maldini and Thuram can cover that. Some serious players not in that line of 4 though, albeit some maybe considered more number 10s in an attacking sense rather than a traditional midfielder

Ronaldo / Van Basten
*Baggio / Signori / Totti / Batistuta / Maradona / Papin / Mancini / Weah / Vialli / Klinsmann / Crespo / Zola / Shevchenko / Vieri
Van Basten was my favourite player ever growing up. Just a fantastic finisher and was all class. Not flashy or showy, did his job and was a brilliant footballer cut down in his prime. And Ronaldo was sensational with Inter. Maradona obviously should be there, but I’m letting bias in, plus Diego was only there a couple of seasons and left under a cloud of drugs. Baggio is probably the next player I’d have picked though. But some of those names there. Weah was unrealable with Milan, none more than that pitch length run and goal against Parma or Verona or someone. They wore yellow I recall anyway.

I’m sure I’m missing some obvious names there though. If I was to go at it again, I would more than likely pick a different 11. And then a different one again after that. A wealth of talent to pick from. The 90s in Serie A was brilliant.

Not necessarily the best team but my favourites as a young chap watching Serie A on a Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon on Channel 4 and onwards

Toldo
Cafu-Thuram-Nesta-Maldini
Pirlo
Nedved-Djorkeaff
Totti
Ronaldo-Vieri

Had to switch Thuram inside. Very hard to pick between him Cafu and Zanetti. Aldair was another lad I had serious time for.

The likes of Van Basten, Rijkaard, Baresi and the best of Baggio are slightly before my time

David Trezeguet was always a guy who I felt was terribly underrated, serious man to score goals. I used to hate Pipo Inzaghi when I was a youngster, thought he was a lazy, diving piece of shit, it is only in recent times I came to appreciate what an artist the man was.

My time watching really only started in around 98 so the Milan team was past its best by then.

I’ll take:
Buffon
Thuram Nesta Cannavaro Maldini
Pirlo
Seedorf Nedved
Del Piero Totti
Sevchencko

Some seriously hard calls to make. Toss of a coin between Cafu and Thuram.

Up front I had Ronaldo but I don’t think he ever really peaked in Italy.

Lippi on the line.

Are you drinking ?

Inzaghi was fantastic. An annoying little shit that was always offside. But like you say, the more you see him the more you appreciate how hard he made the defence worked, pushed them back, kept them on their toes and was always there to finish a half chance. Some good calls there too. Toldo at Fiorntina during those 90s. They were a great team then too. Sampdoria when the won the league with Erikson. Getting in Des Walker.

In fairness to him he always stood out in that Milan team. Stuck out like a sore thumb.

Packie Bonner fucked up that shot.

Packie was expecting a better shot. Donadoni was woeful in that World Cup. Very limited player.

Great contributions and discussion so far. I will offer my musings up later this evening.

Mancini unlucky to miss out

Was totti that good? Always was poor when I saw him in an Italian jersey. No wonder he retired from international football early.

He was a different player in Italy.

Would totti have been any good out of the comfort zone? I doubt it.
