Give me “The Mother” any day

I do not grudge them: Lord, I do not grudge
My two strong sons that I have seen go out
To break their strength and die, they and a few,
In bloody protest for a glorious thing,
They shall be spoken of among their people,
The generations shall remember them,
And call them blessed;
But I will speak their names to my own heart
In the long nights;
The little names that were familiar once
Round my dead hearth.
Lord, thou art hard on mothers:
We suffer in their coming and their going;
And tho’ I grudge them not, I weary, weary
Of the long sorrow - And yet I have my joy:
My sons were faithful, and they fought.

Nice map, if somewhat speculative

And all the deviants from Doggerland settled in Cork

Free access to this newspaper archive to celebrate the jubilee. Already found one potentially very interesting story from my families murky past :grimacing:

Are you a palatine?

An interesting programme events in Askeaton this weekend to commerate the 500 year anniversary of the Desmond-Valois Treaty. The first treaty between Ireland & France, which was signed in Askeaton castle.

Can anyone recommend a stand alone podcast (about an hour) on D-Day?

‘The rest is history’ and ‘a short history of’ don’t have it covered

I don’t know of any podcast on it off the top of my head. Anthony Beevor has a typically detailed tome on it. You wouldn’t even scratch the surface of D-Day in an hour I’d say.

Too late now, all I wanted was a ‘short history of…’ version
You’d do it in an hour no problem

It’s the morning of June 6th, 1944.

Solider James Thompson nervously holds his rifle as his small boat rocks from side to side…

Yip, nuts and bolts job,

… wishing he was back home in the safety of the wide-open Canadian prairies.

Your best bet is to watch the Longest Day when you come back. It’s very historically accurate. Or you could read the book of the same name by Cornelius Ryan.

I found this on IPTV but it is the one with no sub titles so turned it off.

Those fucking American podcasts would wreck your head. Everything has to have a personal story in it. Just tell me info and fuck off.

I like the business wars pod but it absolutely ruins it when start making up conversations between people to fill up time.
