On a recent trip to the country I passed a farm house with a sign outside saying “Farm fresh eggs for sale”. Being fond of an aul egg I stopped, knocked on the door and bought a dozen off a lovely old Bean an Ti who told me they were grand and fresh.
I’ve had about 8 eggs of all different sizes but to my surprise the yolk has been tiny in each and the taste hasn’t been to the standard I thought I’d get, certainly not better than a normal free range you’d get in a supermarket or my personal choice of corn fed eggs.
Why is this?
Have I been mugged off by this dear old woman?
She probably pawned off a dozen bantam eggs on you - country folk can spot a mark a mile off. You should have insisted on hen eggs.

If they’re batam should they be small eggs? a few of the eggs are as big as duck eggs, which I’m also partial to, but the yolk was still tiny.

These are the eggs collected from the renegades of her operation. Hens are a tribal species, scrawnier hens are beaten away from the main areas of feed by their stronger sisters, (overseen by the rooster) hence leading me to assume that you have indeed been mugged.
You’ll learn from this though, it’s hardly her fault. On the upside, you have 4 eggs left. Wrap them in a towel and leave them in the hotpress overnight and the yolk will almost double.
Mugged off good and proper.
Like every agri enterprise the output varies in quality. You got the worst of that batch.
