The award-winning playwright, Hugh Leonard, has died in Dublin.
He was 82 and had been ill for some time.
Leonard won a Tony award in 1978 for âDaâ which formed the basis of a film starring Martin Sheen and Barnard Hughes in 1988.
He wrote screenplays and adapted several books for BBC.
He also adapted the James Plunkett novel, âStrumpet Cityâ for RT Television and wrote two volumes of autobiography âHome Before Nightâ in 1979 and âOut After Darkâ in 1989.
His weekly humorous column for the Sunday Independent was very popular with readers for many years.
Hugh Leonard was born John Keyes Byrne in 1926 in the village of Dalkey which would later feature prominently in his writing.
His first wife, Paula, predeceased him. He is survived by his second wife, Kathy, and his daughter, Danielle.
President Mary McAleese has expressed her sadness at the announcement saying âHugh will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of his company and counsel throughout the years.â
She described him as âa fascinating man whom I have had the privilege of knowing personally over the last 30 years. As a playwright, journalist and radio contributor, Hugh infused his work with a unique wit, all the while demonstrating a great intuition, perceptiveness and forgiveness of human nature.â
The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, said âHugh will be remembered as a great literary figure of modern Ireland. He was one of this countryâs most distinguished playwrights as well as being a journalist of distinction.â
He continued âHugh Leonard was a man of strong views and great wit and these traits were reflected in his writings. His Curmudgeon column which ran for many years in the Sunday Independent was required reading and was always guaranteed to raise a smile.â
Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Martin Cullen has expressed his sympathy saying âHugh Leonardâs legacy is immense. As a storyteller he was creative and compelling. As an individual he was honest, engaging, with a sharp wit and an enquiring mind. His plays in particular evoked a sense of nostalgia and of the triumph of the human spirit.â
Pauline Fowler Rip
Former EastEnders actress Wendy Richard has died aged 65, her agent has confirmed.
The star, who played Pauline Fowler in the BBC One soap opera, had been suffering from cancer.
Her agent Kevin Francis said: âShe was incredibly brave and retained her sense of humour right to the end.â
Last October, Richard revealed she had an aggressive, terminal form of cancer. Soon after that she married her long-term partner John Burns.
Planned funeral
Francis said the star passed away in the Harley Street Clinic in London with her husband by her side.
In an interview with the Sunday Express last year, Richard revealed she had already planned her funeral and written her will.
She discovered the disease had returned after her usual annual check-up, which revealed cancerous cells in her left armpit.
She told the paper: "Now I have a cancerous growth on my right kidney and the cancer has spread to my bones.
âItâs more aggressive this time, unfortunately, and has spread to the top of my spine and left ribs.â
In 2000 Richard was awarded the MBE for services to television and in 2007 she was given a British Soap Award for Lifetime Achievement for her role in EastEnders.
On top of her 21 years on Albert Square, Richard starred in sitcoms Are You Being Served?, Dadâs Army and Grace and Favour.
She joined EastEnders when the programme began in 1985 and remained in it until 2006, when her character died.
The reason she gave for her departure was because she objected to producers making her character remarry.
My final list

To get one on the board in the first quater was quiet a coup. She was a good age, and it is a sad passing of this great Dise woman, but it is quiet fitting that a Waterford man should have her on the list.
Iâm surprised she was allowed on your list
She was in a hospice
