Mid-Term Break by Seamus Heaney
I sat all morning in the college sick bay
Counting bells knelling classes to a close.
At two oâclock our neighbors drove me home.
In the porch I met my father cryingâ
He had always taken funerals in his strideâ
And Big Jim Evans saying it was a hard blow.
The baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pram
When I came in, and I was embarrassed
By old men standing up to shake my hand
And tell me they were âsorry for my trouble,â
Whispers informed strangers I was the eldest,
Away at school, as my mother held my hand
In hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs.
At ten oâclock the ambulance arrived
With the corpse, stanched and bandaged by the nurses.
Next morning I went up into the room. Snowdrops
And candles soothed the bedside; I saw him
For the first time in six weeks. Paler now,
Wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple,
He lay in the four foot box as in his cot.
No gaudy scars, the bumper knocked him clear.
A four foot box, a foot for every year
RIP

Ah no? This is shite news
Doubt thereâs a kid of our generation who didnt have the line âa 4 foot box, a foot for every yearâ embedded in his memory, a line that never left you.
RIP.

A sad day for Irish literature indeed with Seamus Heaney and Maidhc Dainin OâSe passing on.
Sad news. RIP.
As already said that line âa four foot box, a foot for every yearâ is something that people of a certain generation will always remember from school days.

Another tragic victim of suicide. Ariel was exactly the type of person who that Dublin GAA jersey campaign earlier this summer was aimed at and news of another futile death takes some of the gloss off Sundayâs win.
Iâm all for risquĂŠ humour as much as the next man but I donât find that in the slightest bit funny.

Inventor and philanthropist, Ray Dolby, has died, surrounded by his loved ones by the sounds of it.
Thatâs sad to hear so soon after Joe Fazierâs passing. Norton was one serious puncher.
