Ted Joyce, left corner back and last surviving member of the only Carlow side to win a Leinster Senior Football Championship in 1944.

Ah here, this lad wouldnt even be known in parts of Carlow.

Was Liam Hayes Dad Jimmy on that team?

No he wasn’t on the 1944 Leinster winning team. He was on the Carlow team 10 years later in 1954 that reached the League final losing to Mayo.

Think you’ll find that was 1953. My own father was on the 53 team.

That’s very interesting. Who was

That’s very interesting. Who was your father if you don’t mind me asking? Actually, maybe best to send me a PM rather than compromise your annoymity!

We’re both kind of right on the year. It was the league of 53/54. League pretty much ran from October through to May back then, but I’m pretty certain the final proper was played in 1954.

He was one of the best known men in the south east. Apart from his footballing prowess, he owned and ran as good a pub as you’ll find anywhere in the country and an undertaking business.

The Independent felt he was sufficiently important to report his passing over the weekend.
