He seemed like an alright sort.
His New Yearâs Eve shows were a fixture when I was a kid
He was very witty, understated and self-deprecating
I can pay him no higher compliment than to say youâd never have suspected he was Australian, only for the accent
RIP Clive James.
A funny, entertaining bloke.
Thought heâd be more than 80.
One of those I thought was brown bread a while
He was in the departure lounge in a while. Japanese Maple is his finest effort as he waited for his flight to be called. One of the good guys RIP.
Clive Anderson must be a good age as well.
I regular watch episodes of the UK Whose Line is it Anyway on YouTube on the TV.
Absolutely superb stuff.
EDIT: Clive is only 66!
He wrote this back in 2014 when he knew he was dying. He then went into remission. Seemed an alright sort The last few lines of that poem are a good motto for life.
Japanese Maple
Your death, near now, is of an easy sort.
So slow a fading out brings no real pain.
Breath growing short
Is just uncomfortable.
You feel the drain
Of energy, but thought and sight remain:
Enhanced, in fact.
When did you ever see
So much sweet beauty as when fine rain falls
On that small tree
And saturates your brick back garden walls,
So many Amber Rooms and mirror halls?
Ever more lavish as the dusk descends
This glistening illuminates the air.
It never ends.
Whenever the rain comes it will be there,
Beyond my time, but now I take my share.
My daughterâs choice, the maple tree is new.
Come autumn and its leaves will turn to flame.
What I must do
Is live to see that.
That will end the game
For me, though life continues all the same:
Filling the double doors to bathe my eyes,
A final flood of colors will live on
As my mind dies,
Burned by my vision of a world that shone
So brightly at the last, and then was gone
I actually thought thatâs who they were talking about until I got to the 80 bit. I was thinking he couldnât be that age
+1

Gobshite
He was excellent. RIP.
was he the guy that played Dame Edna?
That was Colin Ryan!
Saw him being interviewed about this a while back. Fantastic interview.
Cherry ripe stiched him up pretty badly
Lovely bit of poetry.
Serious swordsman too by all accounts. RIP
I will miss Clive James.
