His two brothers in law fought for the Germans. He himself although born in Greece thought of himself as Danish. He was Prince of Greece and Denmark and a member of the House of Glucksburg family until he switched to the Windsor side. He was not allowed to take his own name into his marriage or give it to his childeren

He did most of his fighting with the Allied Forces in the Mediterranean Fleet - Battle of Crete, Allied Invasion of Sicily and the like.

You should be eternally grateful to the Duke of Edinburgh. It was the likes of the Duke and Bob Paisley that risked their lives to liberate Italy from fascism and that tyrant Mussolini.
