RIP. No one who witnessed that goal at the time will ever forget it
Awful news, RIP.
What a memory he left us with though.
That jersey, iconic
Absolutely I was in 3rd year in college big gang of us watched it in Nancy’s ended up shifting an absolute munter late doors. Glory days🤣
The goal wasn’t enough at the time though. I remember thinking Éire had to win and the goal gave us hope. Obviously it was the one that qualified us but nobody thought that the time it was scored. It’s revisionist now to suggest the whole country thought we were going to the wc after he scored.
Canizares still had to do his thing
Didn’t Hierro score a goal? Or am I remembering that wrong
The players all seemed to assume it was enough at the final whistle - especially Roy Keane - and their play in the last 10 minutes or so of the match itself would sort of indicate they were under the assumption it was enough, but there was another four five minutes to play in Seville. I don’t know why they assumed it was enough. Probably because Mick Byrne came on and told them the other match was over. So maybe he was shouting at them while the match was still on about the score in Seville. I don’t know why people do that sort of thing.
Alan McLoughlin waved them all back to halfway line after his brief celebration, they had to win to be sure. That’s how I remembered it anyways.
Fuck’s sake! 54! Store not your riches.
The late Dalian Atkinson played for England that evening. A cop on trial currently for his murder in England
We need more B internationals.
Although our first team is akin to a B one now.
A knockaderry man. Jaysus never knew that
I cried imaging his poor mother cycling to his games in the rain …
It would have been a hard station being Irish in Manchester in the late seventies.
