Celebrity Deaths 2026

I thought they gave it to the Fridge as they were miles ahead of the Pats and were taking the piss.

I never heard of the guy.

Not the first time I’ve had to tell you that you’re too young to understand

In 85/86 Rte 2 showed a highlight NFL programme on Monday nights with Myles Dungan and it was a roaring success (it seemed to me)
By the time that Super Bowl came around ‘De Bears’ stars and their incredibly intense head coach were well known

The 1986 Chicago Bears occupied a similar sort of niche for Irish people as that of Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks and later on, that thing you’d see on Eurosport at Christmas where a load of headbangers try to drive up a very steep hill in Austria on motorbikes and oversized novelty vehicles.

The Fridge is iconic mate.

They first used him against the 49ers when taking the piss. It became a whole meme.

One of those people who transcend the sport. Like a Lomu or Happy Gilmore

He was iconic, no doubt,
But you’ve massively overegged the pudding in your original post

That SuperBowl was never a contest

What does a contest have to do with it?

With respect, that’s delusional. I’d have been a fairly typical Irish sportsfan teenage boy, I never even heard of the 85 Bears until about 5 years ago when I started doing Fantasy Football. Even now, I’d know they had a very good defence, I’ve vaguely heard of the fridge but that’s it, I wouldn’t know anything else. I presumed the Fridge was a DE or something. I don’t know who they played in the SB. Like - none of my sports mad friends would know what you’re talking about because they’re not terminally online TFKers like me. Your average Irish sportsfan has barely knows who Aaron Rodgers is because they’re not on TFK. They’ve vaguely heard of him.

And guess what, a lot of your sports memories wouldn’t be known outside of Europe or South America at a push.

Because if they handed tie ball to the Fridge to win the game it could be considered iconic, that’s how sports work :man_shrugging:

I remember him from back when the NFL used to be shown here but the video and audio were out of sync.

The Fridge went to the Rams for a while I’m sure.

Correct. I’d still be looking for the Bear’s result nowadays.

So you’ve made your own definition up.

I haven’t defined anything, my interpretation is that one of the most iconic sporting moments of all time all over the world would be a critical moment in a game

I’m merely questioning your own interpretation of the Fridge scoring a TD in Super Bowl XX as one of the most iconic sporting moments ever in Ireland :man_shrugging:
Doesn’t have to always be a row,

Have a look in the mirror for once. You’re in endless rows with everybody, and maybe it’s time to ask yourself why. You know very little, but think you know all, there lies the rub.

Constantly pontificating, then exposing yourself every time. Never has one man said so much about so little.
