I’ve felt this for years, since they reappointed Lennon really, but, given rangers aren’t great, they’re better getting the right people in than overpaying for players who won’t settle or try a leg. My biscuit tin mentality is that once they beat rangers it’s a good enough season.
PS the weather is shocking. I stopped in maccys in Galway on the bike and it’s absolutely hammering down and I’m going to get soaked.
It’s 24 degrees on the mainland.
So it’s being reported in Scotland, England, Germany & other countries that Celtic & Augsburg have reached agreement for the €13mn/£11mn transfer of Arne Engels. Medical booked for tomorrow & he was Rodgers’ #1 target all summer. He can play in several positions but he’s primarily a defensive midfielder. I guess he’ll be important for how Celtic set up in Europe. Been a bit exposed with McGregor too isolated at times. This will allow a DOUBLE PIVOT (cc footix thread) and he would become Celtic’s record signing.
Yer man Alex Valle was confirmed yesterday.
All gone quiet on Bogusz but I hope they sign another versatile but more attack minded midfielder/wide player along with Engels.
Still negotiating with Sheffield United for that Auston Trusty. Important to get a centre back in.
Mikey Johnston is going back to West Brom for £3mn after Celtic accepted bids from 3 English Championship clubs. Some talk that Iwata will be off too. It’s been a shambles this summer in terms of incomings but they’ve moved on a lot of players.
Luke McCowan also linked to Celtic - would help the homegrown pool for Europe but wouldn’t be too enthused about this unless he’s part of a clutch of players announced tomorrow.
Engels & Trusty not officially announced yet but the Sheffield United manager, Chris Wilder Football Liaison, & his Augsburg counterpart have each confirmed the respective deals in their Friday press conferences. McCowan getting mentioned quite a bit as a homegrown acquisition option & various links to late loan deals for midfielder/attacking midfielder types such as Cesare Casedei from Chelsea. I guess they’ll be seeing if there is any domino effect from late EPL deals which might free up some players to move.
Engels & Trusty confirmed. Bid accepted for McCowan & trying to get a loan deal sorted too.
Hopefully the Engels deal is a signal of Celtic actually acting like those savvy European clubs whose trading model is fairly slick. Selling players to top 5 league for huge money (e.g., O’Riley) but having the balls to replenish in signing good players and not being shy to spend some of the dough.
I was expecting Chelsea to loan out a ton of players this season especially since the manager basically said he might have a huge squad but he’s only working with 20 odd of them. The wage bill must be insane.
Mikey Johnston joined West Brom permanently earlier & Iwata has joined Birmingham - not sure if that is loan or permanent. Talk that Naiwrocki might be leaving too.
