Celtic Non-Matchday Discussion

Doesn’t seem to be anyone coming on loan but McCowan has been signed.

Cant argue. A good transfer window. Did I read 23 players sold or gone out on loan? Decent players in.

Playing suberb football since the pace has been added to Rodgers style this year.

A good CL draw.

This might actually be a good year.

Well I’d never heard of any of them before, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

Id rather have Liverpool’s CL draw any day of the week. I’m a bit disappointed with Celtics one tbh. There’s a hint of Thursday night channel 5 off it.

Rodgers has repeatedly talked about the need to add “pace & power” to the squad if you want to do anything at a European level these days. Trusty, Engels, Bernardo, Idah & even the young lad Valle all seem to be along those lines. McCowen then the little Scottish midfield schemer who’s proven at an SP(F)L level.

If these fast, physically imposing lads can play then things are looking up as Rodgers has the team producing good stuff these days. Also seems like the first time in ages Celtic have commanded decent fees for the surplus to requirements lads & the squad is leaner. Hopefully the manic end to the transfer window & the CL draw don’t distract from the need to hammer the huns on Sunday.

@flattythehurdler I totally disagree about the CL draw. Nice balance between “name” opponents - last season’s CL finalists, Europa League winners & an English side - & then some novel opponents offering a decent chance to progress.

I’ve emailed Paddy Power for odds that Celtic reach the semi final of the CL.

We will agree to differ. I Reckon we’ve little chance of progressing. Liverpool got a tour of European royalty. We got gregorz mcengine-fitter

This is aesthetically pleasing from Kasper. Richard Corsie would envy the arc here.

He is a great coach but very very fragile. He also talks himself into corners.

Celtic will play Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup final in December.

The Teddy Bears came from 1-0 down to defeat Motherwell 2-1 in the second semi-final today.

Does celtics performance in champs league this year have any affect on automatic qualification for group stages next year if they do win the Scottish league this season ?

Let me ask that question of some Celtic Twitter types. My vague recollection is that Celtic have to pre-qualify next season as these co-efficient placings are set a year in advance. But I’m not as sharp as I used to be. Does anybody else know? @Rocko @starryplough

You are correct and right @Bandage . One qualifying round for this seasons league winners and three qualifiers for it looks like this seasons runners up Aberdeen. Due to Scotlands coefficient falling outside the top ten is my understanding

Interesting item coming under the hammer at Waterford auction house shortly.

The international break is now over & Celtic return with a Saturday night trip to Tynecastle, live on Sky Sports. Rare to have a late night Saturday game in the SP(F)L/Premier League/Premiership although I recall Celtic losing such an encounter in Postecoglou’s first league game in the 2022-23 season.

Rodgers has described this upcoming period until the next international break as an “ultra-marathon”. Celtic will be involved in 4 competitions & have a guaranteed 25 games in less than 4 months, which could rise to 30+ depending on Scottish Cup & Champions League progression.

First game back after international breaks are often stodgy/flat affairs with bhoys leggy & lacking rhythm after coming back from Asia, America & the likes. Will need the players who had a break over the past 10 days to drive things on - CCV, McGregor, Kuhn et al.

Then its Club Brugge at home next midweek & the big games continue in December with the likes of Aberdeen & Dundee United away, Rangers in the League Cup Final, Dinamo Zagreb away in the CL & more. Rodgers will definitely be required to rotate the squad with the sheer volume of games.

Centre back now looks okay with 2 from CCV, Trusty & Scales. Full back positions probably alright too with Johnston covered by Ralston & Valle & Taylor vying for left back. Taylor still hasn’t signed a new contract & can speak to other clubs soon.

Centre midfield looks decent with McGregor, Engels, Hatate, Bernardo & McCowan. But I think it’s out wide where we’re at least one player short.

Maeda & Kuhn have been really good but lacking someone else as good as them. Palma might be moved on. Yang had an excellent cameo against Leipzig, which was as surprising as it was welcome. Interesting he got the nod ahead of Forrest that night. Forrest did Celtic a massive turn in the second half of last season but can’t go on forever. I’d say they might try to sign a wide attacker in January.

Rodgers wanted one academy/young player to back up Kyogo & Idah & pitched that role to Rocco Vata but he preferred to move on. Talk that young B team striker Daniel Cummings has been promoted to train with the first team - he’s been scoring a lot lately. We could be short upfront if one of the main two get injured. Maeda can also play upfront but that in turn would weaken the wide options.

As an aside, Bernabei has been absolutely ripping it up on loan in Brazil apparently (even Tim Vickery says) & his current club & several others are looking to sign him. His loan is up at the end of December & Celtic could end up getting a decent fee for him.

I also think Celtic should really try to sign Lennon Miller, even loaning him back to Motherwell. We have those 5 midfield options already but I have a feeling Hatate (whose agent was linking him to Leicester & other EPL sides last summer) might move on at the end of the season. There would be plenty of games to go around & I wouldn’t like Celtic to miss out on the next big jocko talent.
