I never said we should pay what Peterborough are looking for, you dimwit.
I said he looks a better player than Ajeti, I don’t think Celtic will pay what they are looking for but Peterborough are entitled to drive a hard sell.
We have Edouard, Ajer and Ntcham (three of our most valuable players) all with 2 years to run on their contracts. It’s hard to envisage none being sold if they are not extending their contracts.
Edouard is unquestionably the most important of those, but we don’t really know if there will be interest in him later in the window. If we’re offered £20m/£25m then that’s one thing and I’d hope it would be rejected. If someone was to offer more then we might well sell. I don’t think the transfer window being open until October is helpful at all.
You have said you would buy him for between £5-6 million you clown. If you don’t think that is a ridiculous fee for a lad who has failed everywhere except some backwater club in League One then you are dreaming.
It’s about the money because it’s professional football.
Do you accept there might be a chance that Edouard himself might want to leave at some stage? If a big club came in for him and the money is better than decent then he and/or Celtic might well push for a move.
There’s every chance he’ll stay and he has been offered a new deal but it’s foolish to think there wouldn’t be any set of circumstances in which he’d leave.
Yes and Celtic have plenty of money so why are you worried what we can get for him when the board, management and fans should all be worried about winning trophies and improving the team.
Celtic are by far and away the most miserly club in Europe. They pushed a homegrown star like Tierney out the door last summer for an absolute pittance.
Anything less than £50m for Edouard should not be entertained.
I’m not worried about what we can get for him. I’m introducing some realism to the topic by suggesting, outrageously, that there is a price at which Celtic will have to consider selling Edouard and there is a type of club that is clearly going to interest the player himself. If those two coalesce then there’s an increased risk of him leaving this summer.
The Tierney point is absolute nonsense clearly. He looks devastated to be playing for Arsenal!
He has two years left on his contract, he hasn’t came out and said he wants to leave. Unless a club comes in with an offer that is difficult to refuse (eg over £50m), then the answer should be no.
But you and I both know that the board will be trying to hawk him for whatever they can get, they did it with Tierney last year - £25m was an absolute pittance for a homegrown player with his ability and potential. Tierney was tied down on a long term deal, he was a homegrown player who would not have rocked the boat to force through a move and £25m was way below what he was worth but the club wanted to cash in.
The priority of the club now should be giving Edouard around 80k a week 2 year extension and if they want to appease him the throw in a £50m release clause. But we know Lawwell only cares about his big fat bonus, didn’t he take something like £5m home last year when Celtic had gone two successive seasons without a negative transfer spend - and here you are defending him, as per usual.
You’re making my point for me anyway - we shouldn’t consider selling him, unless the offer is big enough. That’s what I said. There is a price for everyone. And I hope nobody pays him that.
It would be obviously outrageous to offer him £80k a week because of the implications for everyone else and what that would mean for the wage structure. He has been offered an increase, I’m sure he has been on good money anyway and I’m sure he’ll have plenty of bonuses. But he knows he’ll earn more when he leaves Celtic so I don’t imagine he’s in any hurry to sign a deal that might tie him down for longer. I would imagine any deal he’d sign would have a relatively low release clause. He’s not going to be “tricked into” staying at Celtic for longer than he wants to.
I still think he’ll stay this summer. I don’t think he’s in a rush to leave. But if a big club (say PSG) came in and offered even £20m then I’m sure he’d be pushing for a move and at that point Celtic need to keep him against his wishes or try and get as much money as they can. I think at that price he wouldn’t be going anywhere but it doesn’t mean he wouldn’t want to.
Why would it be outrageous to offer a player like Edouard a £4m a year deal?
He is head and shoulders the best player in the league. He doesn’t need to be tricked into anything, a two year extension with a significant wage increase and a reasonable release clause that gets the club a good fee.
If a big club like PSG came in with a miserly offer of £20m then Celtic should tell them to ram it. It’s £50m or nothing and if Edouard doesn’t like it then tough, Celtic can’t afford to be buckling to the demands of players. In a situation where Celtic accept a lowball offer for a player they are getting played like mugs.
The biggest mugs of the lot are the fans though, a healthy balance sheet, a £25m fee for Tierney last year, nearly £30m for Dembele and Armstrong the year before that a huge compenastion package for Rodgers and it’s been all downsizing since then.
Edouard is “worth” €80k a week but if you pay him that much then suddenly you’re upping everyone’s wages the next time they’re up for renewal. You can’t think about these things as one offs
Edouard is the best player in the league by a mile. You can tell all the rest of them when they start playing to the level Edouard is, then they will get the wage Edouard is.
Larsson was by far and away the highest earner when he was at Celtic.
That’s not the way it works. If your ceiling for wages suddenly jumps from say 30k a week to 80k a week then suddenly you’re paying average players 30k a week and good ones 50 or 60k a week
