Another European game where Samaras playing high on the left was the best Celtic player by a street. Which leads me to wonder if Boerrigter signing will have an adverse impact on Samaras as it could force him into a different role. Boerrigter looks like a very decent player but I think we have a more pressing need for a central midfielder and striker to replace Wanyama and Hooper.

Kayal was muck tonight. He looks an absolute shadow of the player he was in the second half of his first season at Celtic in 2010/11. He trampled all over the huns in the new year’s game at Ibrox that season when the magnificent Georgios Samaras scored a brace in a 2-0 victory.
he hasnt been right since the injury id say, was that the 2011/12 new years game
he’s totally dropped from the national team here as well

Yeah, he broke his foot in a 50/50 with McCulloch in that 2011/12 game at Christmas. Can’t recall if he made it back before the end of that season but he fell right down the pecking order last year behind Wanyama, Ledley and Brown. Mulgrew was even getting a game ahead of him in midfield at times.
Kayal put in one of the most disgraceful performances I’ve seen in a Celtic jersey when Stokes saved Lennon’s job at Rugby Park. Ever since then I have found it hard to hold any respect for Kayal.
I was on vacation back home in America at the time and never saw that game. But I heard all about it - that was the time when he more or less downed tools until he was offered an improved contract.
That’s the price of turning a blind eye to rampant steroid taking. The rugby world is a disgusting environment, not only do the authorities turn a blind eye to it, coaches encourage it. No wonder they are murdering and gang raping, they are ticking time bombs. Of course it helps when the law of the land diminishes them of any responsibility.

The accusation of ‘point scoring’ should be directed at one of your fellow Celtic scobies who brought up padeophilia in the first place. A low dirty blow, typical of soccer skangers. Get your your own house in order first, buddy.

Listen, buddy, one of your fellow thick stupid Celtic scobies was the very one who wanted to score the cheapest of cheap shots and brought everything off-topic and the disgusting subject of paedophila in to this in the first place. AND NOT ME . Do you understand???.
The scobe in question is now desperate and floundering and bringing up drugs in sport, obviously blissfully ignorant to the drugs scandals in Spanish soccer, yet another off-subject topic I can swat a fly with. You are directing your ire in the wrong direction.
To be clear : when I pointed out how Glasgow knacker Celtic was not, to be mild about it, exactly immune from the evil of child abuse ( and Glasgow Celtic being far more culpable in turning a blind-eye to child abuse than even any other major chavball club in the world) I was responding to a cheap shot. You then accuse me of “point scoring”. Get your own house in order first, pal.

you are pathetic for doing so

In contrast to his performance at Kilmarnock, he seems to have been trying too hard in some games recently. That didn’t really seem to be the case last night because he was largely anonymous, but he needs to play himself back into form, not tearing around the place giving away free kicks and trying stupid passes that he’s not capable of.
Boerrigter played on the right for Ajax a fair bit apparently so he’d be an option there. I think that’s clearly Sammy’s best position though so you don’t want him moving from there too often. Oddly it’s the side Stokes likes to drift to also, Watt tends to also play out to the left and Commons when he’s central usually floats that way. All of which means we need more options capable or comfortable of playing on the right beside Forrest.
Lennon’s main priority seems to be a striker at the moment. My top needs would be:
- Central midfieder: preferably one with a bit of robustness to their game. The second coming of N’Guemo if you like.
- Striker
On a side note, and completely unrelated to last night, I’d love to get an offer of £5m or greater for Forster. He’s a charlatan.
Please elaborate
I wish to withdraw my initial comment without fully backtracking.
Forster has improved in each season he has been with Celtic so he retains the ability to get better and work on his weaknesses and he’s still young for a goalkeeper. However I have deep concerns about him. He makes too many errors and is far too indecisive.
He’s prone to the odd error in shot stopping but every keeper has their moments there and he’s generally good. He’s also very good usually at getting blocks in when he has to advance a couple of yards to smother a shot or come out with his feet etc. So once there’s a great chance inside the box, he’s more than capable, and often excels.
Where he’s hugely lacking is in presence. He could and should be much better on crosses but he gets away with things due to his height. Where he is awful is on commanding his box and his defensive line from general play. I was watching our defensive line in a recent game and from long punts forward we were sometimes at the edge of our own box virtually and other times we were up at the half way line. I think we’d like to play further forward and press other teams but anything that gets played over the top goes completely ignored by Forster. There were countless occasions last year where a ball would be hit from an opponent’s half and one of their players would run 30 or 40 yards and his first touch would be inside our box. He’s running 30 yards to get a ball that lands only 10 yards from Forster (and Forster shouldn’t be starting so deep in the first place). And Forster ignores these balls. This happens constantly and it’s not a trivial point. Not only are we gifting opponents great chances, even if the ball is inaccurate or if a defender gets back – we’re allowing them to get possession in our half in the easiest way possible.
One of the reasons Spurs changed keeper last season apparently was to play with a higher defensive line. Lloris commands his penalty box and the 10 yards in front of it from general play. That means his team can compress play in front of them and the defenders can play in front of themselves facint forward without worrying about anything played (aimlessly) in behind them. Celtic players don’t have that luxury and it affects loads of aspects of our defending. We get turned, we look panicked, we try and overplay, we get caught out. It’s so much easier to defend as a centre back if you can attack everything from a secure line with the minimum threat of a ball in behind.
Also Forster’s kicking is dreadful. There were two memorable occasions last night when Wilson did ridiculous things to avoid passing the ball back to him. He is really slow at clearing the ball, and we consequently avoid playing it to him as much as possible. Wilson twice passed the ball along the 6 yard box yesterday instead of rolling it back to Forster who wasn’t interested in it because he’s not quick enough or confident enough to get rid of the ball. So again we panic. And the other consequence of his poor kicking is that we can’t use him to play the ball. I don’t expect him to be Valdes but in a league where we should be dominating possession, we invariably don’t. Our possession stats don’t reflect our win-loss ratio. And that is caused primarily by our poor distribution from the back – most of which originates with Forster.
As I said above, I don’t actually think he’s a charlatan or beyond redemption/improvement. I do think he’s a long way from the finished article though. I think training with England would have shown that to their coaches and I’d be surprised if he was called back again in the short term. If we got a bid that matched his current perceived value then I think we’d have to consider it because I think he outperformed his true current level last season.
Derk Boerrigter was questioned about Rangers at his signing press conference.
His response: “It’s shit for Rangers being in League 1.”
