Celtic Close In On Hibs Hitkid Steven Fletcher As New Boss Mowbray Begins Strengthening His Side

CELTIC boss Tony Mowbray is ready to make a fresh swoop for Hibs hitman Steven Fletcher.
Mogga worked with the 22-year-old at Easter Road and tried to sign him for West Brom in the January transfer window. But Hibs refused to sell Fletcher to the Baggies - and also knocked back a bid from former Hoops boss Gordon Strachan.
Easter Road supremo Rod Petrie wouldn’t put a price on the player’s head but could now be prepared to change that stance as Mowbray prepares a new bid for the 2.8million-rated star.
MailSport can reveal Celtic and Hibs have built up a strong working relationship behind the scenes during the last few months.
And that may lead to Petrie and Hoops chief executive Peter Lawwell getting together to thrash out a fee. Mowbray is understood to be keen to bring in two new strikers and Nancy star Marc-Antoine Fortune is another transfer target.
But other areas will also be strengthened and Preston defender Sean St Ledger is a player the new Hoops boss rates highly.
Mowbray was planning on taking the Republic of Ireland international to West Brom before moving to Parkhead. He may still swoop for him but Everton and Burnley are also keen on the 1.5m-rated stopper.
St Ledger, 24, can play in the centre of defence but is flexible enough to fill both full-back positions. He was born in Birmingham but qualifies for the Irish through his grandfather.
Giovanni Trapattoni was impressed with his form for Preston last term and handed him a cap in the recent 1-1 draw with Bulgaria in the World Cup qualifiers.
Celtic won’t be able to land St Ledger on the cheap but chairman John Reid insists the club will back Mowbray fully in the transfer market this summer.
Since the 6m signing of John Hartson in 2001, the most Celtic have paid for a player is the 4.4m dished out to land Hibs star Scott Brown two years ago.
And Reid revealed the board would be willing to splash out again. He said: "Tony’s brief is to win the SPL and play entertaining football. We also want to punch above our weight in Europe. "The board will try our best to help him achieve that.
"Gordon spent around 34m as Celtic manager and that was quite a lot for a Scottish club.
"Tony will want to shape things his way and he is the boss on the park. If he wants something we will try to give him it.
"Every penny we bring in, we put out again. And we may find a bargain like Henrik Larsson, Lubo Moravcik and Artur Boruc.
“It’s also still possible to spend the kind of fee we spent on Scott Brown. However, we have a constrained budget and that can make things difficult when you’re trying to compete for players from different countries.”
