Celtic Transfers Summer 2010

My latest information:

  • McGeady will politely decline Moscow’s massive offer and inform Celtic later today.
  • Peter Lawwell will be fuming because the fee was Stg£9.5m upfront with a potential further £2.5m in add ons after a certain amount of appearances and if Spartak won the league during the period of his contract. A selling on fee was also in the deal.
  • Aston Villa are back in for him but won’t pay that amount.
  • They are going to offer cash plus the left back, Nicky Shorey.

I suspect the figures being quoted have been swelled up similar to Michael Turner’s move to Sunderland last year.

But is anyone else genuinely puzzled at the figures being quoted for McGeady anyway? Europe is in a serious recession and football in general is dead finance wise. How a player who by all accounts was diabolical at a woeful club level standard last year and has never been a factor in his 30 odds caps at international level is worth anywhere near the 8m mark is bizarre. Particularly when the main suitor is Spartak Moscow. He wouldnt be an automatic starter in any of the top 8 clubs in the EPL so I find it a bit bizarre.

Of course if the offer was anyway genuine and if he had balls of any description he would be off to prove the doubters wrong. He will probably be content to sit on the bench at Villa Park this season.

I adore the way you live in fear of McGeady gaining any success so rush to laugh off any news story that paints him in a positive light.

It’s stretching things a little to suggest McGeady travelled to Moscow to discuss an offer that wasn’t genuine. You did of course tell us a few weeks back that “McGeady to Villa is a done deal.”

Could it be that you’re wrong and that the rest of the international media is correct? You’re the only person disputing the money or the bona fides of the offer but I’m sure you have impeccable sources.

Aiden may well end up going to Villa but that’s not because Spartak haven’t offered a substantial fee in excess of £9m. I think it’s very clear to the sane world that they have.

mcgeady looks a misearable cunt at the best of times, can you imagine what he will look like plying his trade in russia? if i were celtic i woukld bite someones hand off if they offered anywhere near 9 million. because quite simply the guy is an average player with zero end product…

Celtic have accepted the bid, that’s why he was in Russia. Thanks for your input.

Josh Thompson linked with moves away to Bolton or Stoke today on Sky Sports News.

We’re linked with signing Valladolid keeper Sanz and centre-half Arzo.

The only one that lives in fear of the young Glaswegian I suspect is himself.

As an Irish international I’d love to see him come good. But nearly 30 caps on I reckon the bus aint coming.

hi jinx i wonder

From Cesar Arzo’s wiki page

César Arzo Amposta (born 26 January 1986 in Villarreal) is a Spanish footballer who currently plays for Real Valladolid, as a central defender. He is famous in Spain for his hobby of riding raging bulls fully naked.

I know I’m now after predicting that McGeady will both reject and join Spartak Moscow. But the latest news is that the Stg£2m signing on fee and £50k per week after tax will be enough to tempt him away.

That is consistent with my information. A privilege to watch him play for Celtic.

All the money is available to spend according to Lennon… we’ll see. Something we were discussing the other day but that is deeply frustrating is our enthusiasm for cashing in on players who are running down their contracts. I know we got burned a bit on Bosmans before but we’ve let the likes of Donati and Boruc go when there were no replacements and it’s cost us matches. Trying to do the same now with Andy Hinkel is awful stuff. We’re not going to get that much for him anyway, can’t we just reward him for a good few seasons and play the guy.

Yeah Lennon said that he came in yesterday and said his goodbyes before his inevitable departure for Moscow.

I’m glad he is going to a club that will be challenging regularly for trophies instead of mid table mediocrity with the other club that was strongly linked with him.

Best of luck Aiden. The pleasure was all ours.

Aiden McGeady has just signed for Spartak Moscow.

All the very best of luck to the bhoy.

is he the first irishman to play for a russian club?

might book a trip for when they play st petersberg to see him play & have a look at the winter palace where rasputin had such influence

glad he went to a top team & not some shitty team like wolves or villa

Fucking privilege seeing him play for Celtic. A gifted player with such an attacking flair, a rare footballer in today’s world. Goal on his debut and gave it his all in every game. It’s not easy being consistent as a creative winger and there were spells when his form dropped a little but he never stopped trying and he never reverted to doing the easy thing. A genius.

Best performance from him that I saw in the flesh was at home to Benfica when he got the only goal in a 1-0 win. He was devestating that night. Destroyed their full back and kept the ball for ages at a go.

Was also excellent against Hearts in the CIS Cup in a game that we lost but have it on TFK video so may as well link to it here:

Very very sad to see him leave. He’s not really replacable. There’ll be money to improve the rest of the squad so time will tell how well we reinvest the proceeds but Aiden McGeady owes Celtic nothing.

I’ve just had a cry while watching the king of wing video. The Champions League display against Benfica was on another level to anything ever produced at that level by an Irish player before or since. Some great memories of watching Aiden play indeed:

  • The Cup Final display and goal against the huns in extra time last season.
  • Knocking Alex Rae’s teeth out.
  • Champions League debut against Milan.
  • SPL debut and goal against Hearts.
  • Skinning Ferguson that time and then refusing his hand when he was hacked down.
  • That outrageous piece of skill for Skippy’s goal at Pittodrie.
  • The injury time assist for Donati to put us through to the last 16 of the Champions League in 2007.
  • The runs.
  • The spins.
  • The skill.
  • The interview in the dressing room after the league victory was sealed on the last day in 2008.
  • His Champions League goal against Villarreal.

Here’s the skill mentioned above against Aberdeen:

Larryduff has just met Robbie Keane and told him the news. Reaction to follow from Larry.

Ah what a genius.

Lennon had some interesting quotes about Paddy after the game yesterday. I remember Mowbray saying a year ago that the club had a few experts looking at him and they concluded that physiologically he just isn’t built to be a professional footballer so they had to settle on getting him as much games as they can. I’d love to see him play more - the absence of an SPL reserve league certainly doesn’t help him.

Lennon said: “Paddy’s fitness is improving and he got 90 minutes under his belt today, but he has a wee breather now and again in games.

“He had a wee niggle with his hamstring so we need to monitor that, but there’s no doubting his talent and we saw that again. I don’t know if you can ever get him fully fit.

“Everyone has been trying that for the time he’s been here, but he may never do it for a concerted period of time.

“Playing consistently a number of games, he hasn’t done that since he’s been here, but we’re working towards that. If he keeps getting niggles, though, we have to pull him out.”

When given the opinion McCourt could influence games as much as McGeady, Lennon added: “I agree. He’s playing against Michel Salgado, who has been a world-class full-back, and given him a really tough time for long periods of the game.

“He’s wonderful to watch. He’s beautifully balanced and he’s got great vision and great feet and that’s why we decided to get him on a longer-term contract. He’s pleased and we’re pleased.

“They’re different types of players. Paddy doesn’t have Aiden’s dynamic style of play, but he’s got qualities that more than make up for that in his vision, touch and timing of passes. We’d all love to see Paddy play 25-30 games a season, but you have to take it week by week.”

McCourt’s nutmeg, run and through ball for the goal yesterday was really class to watch. He suckered a few more of them throughout the game with little swerves and changes of pace; he chased a ball over wide left at one stage and kept it in by standing on it and doing a drag back through Salgado’s legs. The move ended with Rasmussen missing a one v one with his first touch. He can certainly open up SPL defences when they defend in depth behind the ball.
