Celtic Transfers Summer 2010

The Shay Given deal, which I alluded to several pages back, is getting ever closer also.

Liam Lawrence seems fairly definite in his mind that he’s coming to Celtic once Aiden is offically gone. From The Glasgow Evening Times:

Liam Lawrence set for leap to Celtic

Stoke winger Liam Lawrence expects to complete his move to Celtic when Aiden McGeady finally leaves the Parkhead club.

McGeady will pen a four-year deal with Spartak Moscow this week and hand boss Neil Lennon an extra £9.5million towards his transfer kitty as he tries to reshape his squad ahead of the start of the SPL season.

Lawrence has been a long-time target of the Hoops and reckons his transfer will be given the green light when McGeady jets out to Russia.

He said: “Well, that’s what I’ve been told. I want a new challenge and, if it comes about, I will be chomping at the bit to achieve things at Celtic because they need to push this year and win things again.

“I have had some little bits of banter with Aiden as well.

“I spoke to him the other day and fired him a text because I knew he was off to Russia. I’m not telling you what I said though.

“It’s a massive, massive move for him and it’s an important decision both football-wise and for him and his missus.”

The capture of the Republic of Ireland international will represent the next piece of the jigsaw for Lennon as he continues his summer rebuilding work.

And Lawrence insists the Hoops are still an attractive prospect despite their Champions League exit at the hands of Braga last week.

“I’m not one of those players who say they want to move because a club is in the Champions League,” he said.

Meanwhile, Celtic’s Europa League opponents Utrecht were beaten 3-1 by Feyenoord in the opening round of matches in Holland.

It wont be this season.

Nicky Shorey is gone to West Brom so you can cross him off the list

He’s as poor as what we currently have so that’s a relative relief.

Yeah pleased Shorey isn’t coming in anyway. Not good enough.

Lawrence, Given, Keane/Bellamy and a top class centre back would have me happy enough.

Hooper’s taken a calf strain yesterday so it’s imperative that we sign up Keane and/or Bellamy now.

Don’t forget a left back is still required though.

If we hold onto Hinkel then we might be able to juggle our full backs. We’d be a bit short but it is possible. Lose him and just use that money to get in someone of reasonable ability and experience. That guy who stole the show in the World Cup Final might be an option.

Who? The guy who tried to rob the trophy?

Can’t believe you lads are leading a tribute to McGeady and not one of you has mentioned his quote when he collected the player or young player of the year award a few years back.

Celtic are meant to have made an inquiry to Crystal Palace regarding the availability of their Argentinian 'keeper, Julian Speroni. He’s hardly Boruc class, I would suggest.

  you are one deluded clown. If a professional footballer cant hack it in the SPL he should take up a new trade.

best of luck to young aiden. The move might mature him a bit. Hope he proves me wrong.

Think Bellamy is interested in linking up with dutch coach Steve McLaren at Wolfsberg

Lawrence has snubbed Glasgow Celtic

Liam Lawrence has turned his back on a potential move to Celtic after growing tired of waiting for the SPL club to make their move.

The Stoke winger - out of the Republic of Ireland’s friendly against Argentina in Dublin tonight because of a groin strain - has now pledged his future to the Potteries side.

Hoops boss Neil Lennon first revealed his interest in the £2million-rated player two months ago and Lawrence publicly stated his desire to move to Parkhead.

As recently as the weekend he claimed the imminent £10million sale of international team-mate Aiden McGeady to Spartak Moscow would clear the way for Celtic to make a bid for him but now appears to have performed a U-turn.

“The idea of a move to Celtic was really appealing at the end of last season,” he told the Scottish Sun.

"It has gone on for so long now and they have bought a lot of players.

"Clearly, they’ve had plenty of opportunity to come and get me but for whatever reason it hasn’t happened.

"Stoke have been brilliant with me, stating they were prepared to give me the chance of a move if the conditions were right.

"I really wanted the opportunity to play for Celtic. If they had come in for me I would’ve been happy to go.

"With things dragging on it has given me time to reconsider everything.

"I have had a brilliant pre-season with Stoke, I’ve really enjoyed it, and now I feel I’ve got to be fair with them.

“I feel the best thing for me now is to stay and try to play in the Premier League.”

Lawrence, 29, added: "Of course it’s a big disappointment when a huge club like Celtic comes in for you and it looks like an exciting opportunity - but nothing materialises.

“Maybe it wouldn’t have been the right opportunity. Now I’m just focusing on the new season with Stoke.”

Not much of a snub - I wanted to go but they didn’t make a move for me.

I don’t think you understand the point correctly. Try reading it again. He isn’t fit enough to play 90 minutes for the first team regularly. He isn’t a regular for the first team as a result. He can’t build up that fitness or maintain his below par fitness levels outside the first team because there’s no SPL reserve league anymore. Hope that’s clear for you.

Yea but if I’d put it like that Rocko it would have had no chance of getting someone to bite on it.

I like Lawrence but I think he’s going to be out for 6 weeks with this groin strain and we can’t spend money on injured players. Additionally, our priorities are goalkeeper and defence for now, even with Aiden leaving. We need McCourt, Maloney and McGinn to step in to good effect and Lennon also regularly plays a 4-3-3 with strikers like Samaras and Murphy filling the wide roles.

Welcome home Craig Bellamy.
