Celtic v Huns ☘

Kenny Miller losing the plot over the red card nearly two hours later.

The fear is that Lowell and Desmond will think they have the level of player to win the league and won’t bother buying much quality . Will Rodgers stay ?

Where was Cantwell today ?

Celtic could do with finding a central midfielder to take the ball of the centre backs. The lads in there today would only show for it as a last option. If they had a lad that could pick a pass too wouldn’t go a miss. They played most of the game over and back in front of rangers.

Surprised at some of the negativity here.

It was always going to be a nervous game but we controlled nearly all of it and restricted them to a couple of half chances in the first half and really nothing in the second half.

We could have used the extra man a bit more potentially but they were happy to sit in and we were happy to keep the ball.

We still created some good chances from start to finish and really should have taken more.

But as @Bandage said we’ve won three games against them and drawn one we should have won. There’s definitely a gap in quality particularly in midfield where we had three playmakers and they had none.

Please say it isn’t so
Why Willie and Danny had to goooooooo

Be interesting to see if Rangers start Raskin and sterling in centre mid for cup final .

Maybe. He doesn’t seem to like Raskin much. Either way I don’t think it’s much of a change. Still favouring battlers and athletes over footballers in the middle.

I’m not a big Scales fan and he was poor today. But just to balance the books for the accountants among us he defended very well for the last 15/20 minutes when there was defending to be done. They tried a few long balls in his area and he was equal to them. Also cut out a couple of crosses and had some decent clearances.

Aside from the vulnerability under a high looping ball, his biggest problem is on the ball obviously. I don’t think CCV is a very good passer at all but what he does have is decisiveness. Scales is ponderous and uncertain on the ball. I would give him some leeway in that I think it’s slightly more complicated on his side. Taylor inverts more often which opens up a pass to the winger (Maeda today) but that’s a pass that needs to be played with pace. Also Hatate is a lovely footballer but he doesn’t look for space on the left side the same way O’Riley does on the other side.

We could certainly do with an upgrade over Scales. And teams have definitely decided to leave him with the ball. But he defended well in the second half and I think he’d be a lot better if he was just quicker with his passing.

That’s a fair point on Scales’ defending late on. He cut out a couple of crosses, won his headers & was generally sound. But his range & speed of passing is a problem in the “build up” and it’s more pronounced because of panicky indecision on the ball. Taking lots of touches before he even settles on his pass & then often misplacing or telegraphing it, if he hasn’t been caught in possession himself. I think you’re a bit kind to him in citing Taylor & Hatate positioning/style as mitigants though - I just think he’s not good on the ball at all. In theory a left footed centre back should open up the pitch on that side but his limitations mean we don’t get the benefit of it. CCV doesn’t have a great range of passing either but that was an unlikely raking long ball out to Maeda for the second goal.

I don’t think Scales is at the required standard or close to it. I think Ralston is borderline good enough to be in the squad and I think Scales is below that level. But I guess I’m saying he needs to be taught to just move the ball quickly to avoid getting into trouble. When he takes a few touches without progressing he invariably gets into trouble. And given he has a new contract we need to work on making him more passable at bringing the ball out.

James Forrest had a great game again today. He would have been behind all of Kuhn, Yang & Palma in the pecking order a couple of months ago but has taken his chance & contributed hugely. A very pleasant surprise.

He had Barisic in all sorts of trouble alright. And a nice progressive pass to McGregor for the first goal. He is making very good decisions on the ball most of the time. Thought Kuhn did fine when he came on too and they didn’t get the Turkish lad forward much.

Nice longer clip of the opening goal. Very nice football indeed with plenty of different players involved.
