Celtic v Rangers - Sunday 12.30pm, Sky Sports

I’ll be attending the inaugural Raheny St Patrick’s Parade tomorrow and will therefore watch the game “as live” later in the day. @Rocko, if I get tense & curious about the match I’ll send you the coded message…Do you need anything in the shop? If you reply “I think we have everything we need” then that means it’s all under control. An alternative response indicates anything from dour stalemate to rampant hun victory, but you’ll crucially not have revealed the exact score.

I think every Celtic supporter expected:
Schmeichel;
Johnston, CCV, Trusty, Schlupp;
Engels, McGregor, Hatate;
Kuhn, Maeda, Jota.

Well that was until McGregor’s calf injury was revealed yesterday. He’s come off in the second half of the last couple of games & hasn’t trained this week but was hoping to take part today & prove his fitness. Bernardo is still injured & Scales is out too - he might need cheekbone surgery after taking a bang against St Mirren recently. We’d be light in midfield without McGregor & Bernardo. Engels would drop back to the deeper role, with McCowan probably coming in. Otherwise Schlupp could move into midfield with Taylor filling in at left back. You’re then looking at some younger players as squad options. Yang & Idah will likely be used off the bench.

This is the first game with away support for a good while. The huns will have around 2,400 supporters in & netting has been erected. That kind of number will be reciprocated at Ibrox after the split.

The huns will be buoyant (deluded?) after going through in Europe the other night. Celtic should be forewarned about fatigue - there was the cup semi final in 2022 where Rangers under Van Bronckhorst defeated Postecoglou’s Celtic AET only 2.5 days after winning AET in Europe. They did look out on their feet throughout extra time on Thursday though so Celtic need to get after them with a high tempo.

They’ve rolled out the same game model against Celtic in recent times & had success last time out at Ibrox - it’s man-marking in midfield to disrupt Celtic’s build up & having specific triggers on when to press as a team. Basically not being bothered with possession stats but looking to restrict Celtic & win the ball back around halfway to strike quickly on the break. I’m mildly curious to see if their exploits on Thursday will prompt any change to that approach - will they look to conserve energy rather than press & set up more defensively & deeper as a unit?

Either way, Celtic need to be way better than last time out against them. I’ll be quite irked if Celtic are again discomfited by the hun set up. I’d expect the coaching staff to have looked at that in depth & the side to have been drilled in different ways to play through, around & over them (cc Kev’s principles of invasion sports). Whether that’s dropping a second midfielder back alongside McGregor in the build up & one of the wingers coming infield as another passing option etc to drag them into different areas. Looking forward to seeing Schlupp play against them - he’s been very good since joining & has the athleticism & physical attributes that should suit a derby.

Interestingly (for me), Rodgers has been fairly vocal in the lead up to this game both about the last match & putting it up to the players to respond. He also didn’t deliver any platitudes about Ferguson either when invited to by the media yesterday. Just said he hasn’t noticed anything different about Rangers under him than the previous coach & cited some good wins & poor defeats in his clutch of games. I generally think he’s considered in what he says so I don’t know if he was trying to wind them up a bit.

You must be TFK number 1 Celtic supporter:clap::clap:

Splendid analysis as ever.

Unfortunately I’ll be at the mercy of Celtic Park WiFi but shall do my best to reply if coverage permits.

Rumours this morning that Trusty is doubtful/out. That would be quite problematic on top of the Scales injury. Presumably Dane Murray would start.

The midfield is the bigger concern though. We’ve improved there defensively in the last couple of months I think with Engels playing a little deeper. But if we’re left with Engels holding behind Hatate and McCowan he’ll have a lot to do there on his own. And we’ll have nothing on the bench to help that apart from that Schlupp switch. Which is also doubly disruptive. Would be great to get 60 minutes from McGregor. It also means our best midfielder this season (Engels) would be primed for a dominant display against the huns. For a variety of reasons he hasn’t really had that opportunity yet.

Looking forward to seeing the front three and Idah running at that defence though. The huns didn’t look great at all the other night I didn’t think.

We owe them a doing. Let’s give them one today.

Yeah Engels hasn’t started any of the three previous derbies this season - had just joined for the first one, had that dip in form around the League Cup Final & was sick overnight before Ibrox. He’s come off the bench in all of them, including taking a coin in the head in the last one. I’m taking him to bestride this game like a colossus & expect him to score from outside the box.

I’d like to see rangers win and barry Ferguson given his role on a permanent basis.

He was great against bayern so should be well able for these chumps

Omens are good for the Teddy Bears, they beat Tommy Burns’ (RIP) Celtic 1-0 at Celtic Park on Sunday March 16th, 1997 to effectively clinch the nine in a row and won the League Cup final against Celtic on Sunday March 16th, 2003, with Celtic having a late equaliser controversially ruled out if I remember correctly from watching it in the Cellar Bar in Eglinton Street, Galway.

Rangers also won the League Cup final on Sunday March 16th, 2008 in a penalty competition against Dundee United, so it’s very much a pet date for the Ibrox men.

Barry Ferguson’s presence as Rangers manager turns what would in other circumstances be a dead rubber into a must watch in a similar way to how the March 2007 fixture at Celtic Park became must watch after the return of Walter Smith (RIP) to Rangers, a fixture the Light Blues duly won 1-0 with a goal by Ugo Ehiogu (RIP).

No McGregor
No Trusty

I didn’t think there was any substance to the Trusty rumour yesterday. :grimacing:

I can’t even remember the last time Nawrocki played, he’s been completely bombed out with Dane Murray featuring ahead of him in squads lately & even getting game time in the cup against Raith & in the Aston Villa match.

Two young fenian midfielders on the bench in Bonnar & Turley but first change in there during the game most likely to be Schlupp into midfield & Taylor on at left back.

I still think the starting midfield is fine but I’m a little concerned about Nawrocki. He’s slow at the best of times, never mind when he’s clearly going to be lacking match fitness. If he acquits himself okay then it’s a compliment to the first team training regime.

Yeah that’s a big concern. I completely get why he’d start ahead of Murray but that doesn’t tally with him clearly being behind him in the selection order all season. We’ve done everything we can to not play him.

Blogger is backing Celtic, that’s a massive negative.

Huns have Yilmaz in for Jefte. It could be 5 at the back again but they have flexibility to go with 4 either as Barry Ferguson explained the other night.

This a fucking shit show so far

Are Bazza’s boys winning?

The Ferguson factor coming up trumps here as the Teddy Bears take a 0-2 lead. What a superbly worked goal that was. Perfectly judged headed flick by Raskin and an ice cool finish by Diomande.

And isn’t the manager pleased.

It’s very lucky for Glasgow Celtic that Coach Ferguson and his trusted lieutenants Dodds and McCann weren’t in situe since the start of the season. They just get the Teddy Bears.

He’s just an all round combative presence and that filters through to the players.

Absolutely shocking from Celtic . So much space there if they figure out the rangers press but they’re making Ferguson look like some tactical genius . Johnson seems to be celtics only attacking option .
