Brann Squeeze Through
After winning the first leg 1-0 at home, Brann travelled to Latvia with an advantage that it took Ventspils five minutes to make an end to. Brann played a weak first half, and after five minutes Ventspils took a 1-0 lead in the second leg of the matchup.
And it got worse. Even though goalscorer Zurabs Menteshashvili was shown the red card shortly after his goal, Brann were not able to take advantage of playing against ten players. One minute before half time the latvian side added another to make it 2-0.
At halftime, Brann made two susbtitutes and took out gambian striker Njogu Demba-Nyrn. Icelandic Armann Bjrnsson came on as a defender, and Azar Karadas was moved up as a striker. Also former Moncao-player Hassan El Fakiri left the game to make room for Brann’s midfield proteg Tijan Jaiteh.
And it did not take long before the subs made a difference. Five minutes into the second half Brann had a corner kick from the right. Ventspils cleared the ball but Cato Guntveit sent the ball back into the box where Armann Bjrnsson sent the ball into the net.
This was also the final score, making the aggregate score 2-2 and Brann are through to the next round on away goals. So then in order to qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League Brann needs to beat the french side Marseille after two legs. The first leg will be played in Bergen at Brann Stadium wednesday august 13th.
