Champions League - 2008/09

Poor performance from Liverpool. Keane and Torres doesn’t seem to be working at all. In four games against Liege twice, Sunderland and Middlesboro they’ve relied on long shots and then one goal from Kuyt to get goals. Defensively they look as solid as ever but Benitez really needs to expand things a bit if they’re going to press on.

You can play percentages in Europe where it’s a higer quality and you need to be a bit more cautious and wins aren’t imperative. The Premier League is a different fish though and Liverpool don’t look cut out to mount a title challenge. Early days but I’d be worried if I was a Liverpool fan.

poor performance. Only saw it from second half on, but El Zahr was the most inventive and livliest 'pool player on view. Babel was shite when he came on, and Gerard wasnt an attacking threat at all. Torres looked like he’d just played a full season of games. Lucky win, but sure a win is what matters I suppose.

liege played well - i would have liked to see a bigger mix of countries in the CL - still did that cypriot team get through - thats a good sign

the liege fans were good too

Pot 1 - inevitably they’re all decent teams. Lyon and Liverpool are probably the weakest these days. Liverpool have an excellent European pedigree that looks like it will last longer than Lyon’s - they look like a club on the slide.

Pot 2 - All decent teams but there’s nobody standout there with the exception of Juve, though I haven’t seen that much of them since they came back to Serie A. Bremen are usually fragile in Europe and so are Sporting.

Pot 3 - Some teams in there that look weaker than Pot 4, namely Basel and Bordeaux, while Panathaikos are usually good for losing their away games (as are Celtic I suppose). Zenit would be the one to avoid I’d imagine.

Pot 4 - The first 4 teams there are excellent with Donetsk being the one to avoid probably followed by Atletico and then Kiev in that order. Fiorentina were very average against the huns last year but have excellent pedigree for a Pot 4 team. Others will be no pushovers but can’t have too many complaints about them.

Fair play to Romania - getting two teams into the group stages, they must be doing something right.

didnt Cork knock out a cypriot team a few years ago- times have changed

shaktar or madrid would be nightmare draw for Celtic

Just looking at the results tonight from an SPL perspective - the country rankings at the moment have Scotland in twelfth place for next season, followed by Switzerland, Belgium, Greece and Denmark in that order. The twelfth spot is the last one with an automatic qualification for the CL so that’s guaranteed for next season but 2009/10 could be a problem.

The coefficient points for 2004/05 will be lost year. They amounted to 4.75 and it will be difficult to get those points on our own - assuming no help from other teams. So that puts Scotland in a bit of danger for 2009 but the countries below don’t look like challenging too much. Obviously they’ll be more adept at picking up UEFA Cup points however - the Swiss have Basel in the CL and then four teams in the UEFA Cup.

It’s all very early days to be talking about 2010/11 qualification and by that stage countries like Holland and Turkey will be in trouble too.

The group I would hope for: United, Lisbon, Basle and Anorthosis Famagus. The Group I wouldnt want: United, Bayern, Celtic and Atltico Madrid.

I was scunnered when Liverpool won as the cunts let me down in my accumulator and I thought the Belgians deserved penalties after the effort they put in.

From a Liverpool perspective, they just didn’t have enough width and didn’t stretch Liege enough. As Farmer said, neither Benayoun or Kuyt are natural wingers and they don’t possess the ability to go past players on the outside and whip in crosses from the byline. Babel had a pretty rotten cameo when he came on but it was ultimately his cross that brought the goal - still think he could push on and do good things this season.

Overall, they made themselves easy to defend against by trying to play between the width of the penalty box most of the time and forcing passes through a very congested area. Admittedly, I only saw it from the second half onwards though.

As for the other games, Atletico Madrid are now a real wild card in Pot 4. Shakhtar also look to be as dangerous as ever and these two are definitely the sides to avoid from that Pot.

Fucking joke!

Brann were rated to be massive underdogs against world-class Olympique Marseille wednesday evening. But it was Brann who started best with a big scoring chance for Erik Huseklepp. He ran the ball along the byline after passing a defender and had a great scoring chance with only the goalkeeper between him and the goal. The shot however was deflected by a lucky Steve Mandana and to a corner kick.

After shaking off the weak start, Marseille took over posession for most of the game. The home side came close in the first half with a shot from the left short distance shaking the post. The first half finished quite evenly with one scoring chance for each side.

The second half was not very different until a big defensive mistake by icelandic national defender Kristjan rn Sigurdsson. Brann goalkeeper Hkon Opdal came outside the box to clear the ball and Mamadou Niang ran by a passive Sigurdsson to steal the ball and ran it into the goal.

Sigurdsson however redeemed himself shortly after. Brann had a free kick from the right, and the cross from Jan Gunnar Solli found Sigurdsson who headed the ball to the right of the goalkeeper but inside the left post, giving hope to Branns players.

For a while Brann had the french side nervous and the home crowd started to show their unrest towards Marseille. Brann started to push the french side into their own half and mistakes were made in the Marseille defense. But the miracle in Brugge from last year was not repeated. One minute into stoppage-time Sigurdsson headed the ball towards goalkeeper Opdal. The header however was too weak allowing enough time for Mamadou Niang to steal the ball once more and put it into the net to make the final score 2-1.

  • The cross from Solli was amazing and Kristjan (Sigurdsson) is always strong inside the box. He did well to score, said winger Erik Huseklepp to Viasat 4 after the game.

  • We had them nervous there for a while, and it was a good team-effort. It is unfortunate that we made the second mistake. A draw would have been a strong result. Now we hope to qualify for the group-stage of the UEFA-cup. It was great fun last year, said the always optimistic Brann-player.

when did Hatem Ben Arfa join marsaille…he has fair potential…last i heard he was at lyon and man united were looking to buy him before euro2008…

He joined in the summer, think they spent the Nasri money on him.

thought as much…surprised me didn’t move onto bigger and better things…

Ah Marseille wouldn’t be the smallest of clubs. 40,000 at the game last night, though they were playing SK Brann who would be a big crowd puller…

im not saying they are small but considering that he has left lyon who have won the last 5 french titles…why leave them to join what are more than likely also rans…considering united were interested, liverpool were looking for a winger, im sure arsene wenger wouldn’t say no to a (french) player of his talent or any of the big spanoish sides either…

I think hes a little bollix with notions above his station and the bigger clubs didnt want to chance him
