Champions League 2022/23 Matchday One (its a grand old team to play for)

0-3 harsh on Celtic

0-4 Reuben Dias

No shame in that, Real Madrid are an institution.

Houghton is a painful cunt

Something about Benzema’s injury that forced him off didn’t look great. Wouldn’t be too surprised to see him miss the World Cup with it.

Celtic gave a good account of themselves there. 3-0 very harsh. Needed one of the early chances to go in. Madrid were always going to get some chances second half. Modric is a fucking wizard.

Good performance form Celtic … just playing the kings of Europe you get punished for
every mistake … bigger games ahead

He has to be juicing …

Modric > Zidane

There won’t be a different game plan. But the other matches won’t be against Real Madrid.

First goal was brilliant football because that was a good press we put together. Ray was right that Juranovic might have done better but he was absolutely correct to come in centrally, just had a poor body shape to deal with the ball past him.

Elements of fortune and misfortune about the second one. And the third one was poor defending.

But that was a terrific performance all in all from Celtic. Needed to be more clinical and chances probably fell to the wrong guys. But that’s the difference in class.

Presume that’s the second goal? Don’t think he had a chance at any of them and thought he did well to get as much of a hand to the second half as he did.

Was great to hear

That was comfortable for Real Madrid in the second half but great LEARNINGS for Celtic. I think Celtic were excellent for the first thirty minutes and still good overall. They came up against some hall of famers there. That said, the margins are very small at that top level. The first goal was sheer quality from Real’s perspective. Celtic had put a real squeeze on them and I thought we’d actually won the ball high up twice earlier in the move. Shows you the technique and speed of these lads to play through that press. And the second goal came from CCV careering into Giakoumakis with a lunging tackle and the ball breaking favourably to them. We needed the first goal in hindsight and went very close to it on three occasions. I agree with the very astute Michael Owen here that Celtic can walk off the field with their heads held high and that they can beat most teams in this competition. That’s a very good Celtic team, according to Michael. Some result for Shakhtar Donetsk to win 4-1 away to Leipzig in the other group tie. Ex Celt Marian Shved with two goals. Celtic away to Shakhtar (in Warsaw) next week.

They lost 3-0 to a Madrid team who were in 1st gear. Go way ta fuck.

The jocko’s legs had gone by that stage.

Just saw the Leipzig-Shakhtar highlights and am reassured about Celtic’s chances next week. Looked like a freak 1-4. A goalkeeper howler where he passed the ball to Shved allowing him to roll it into an empty net, a double deflection to go back in front after Leipzig had battered them and drawn level and then 2 breakaway goals late on when Leipzig were piling forward.

We go again

The press was good, they dispossessed them loads but Madrid are ruthless. As you said they are unlikely to meet the same level of team again and they troubled them first half. Legs went a bit then. The press is fairly frantic. A lesser team would fall apart. But Modric is a press destroyer and when a team gets beyond it you are goosed
