Champion's League Matchday 2

Got one working thanks Bandage.

McGeady with an effort just over the bar followed by Alex clipping the bar after a run and pass by McGeady. I like Spartak’s attacking nature - 1 holding midfield player, the 2 wingers and then Alex in a free role behind his two fellow Brazilians.

Was i mad to put half of this weeks betting money on Brag winning at home to Shatkar? They have an excellent home record, and the odds were decent.

Got decent odds on Chelsea-Roma double, i hope yer team does it for me ncc/bando, chelsea should cruise home.

20 mins gone and it’s fair to say McGeady is flying it. Spartak getting the most chances here

McGeady is playing excellently here. Spartak should have had a penalty there after a Welliton header from a McGeady cross was handled by a defender. They’re applying serious pressure.

1-0 Spartak at half time; Ari with a header from a corner. McGeady and Alex, the left footed Brazilian playmaker, are having outstanding games.

He is playing very well indeed. Alex is excellent but he is useless at taking corners from the left. Gets way too much curl on the ball and it ends up outside of the box before anyone headers it. I have a similar problem controlling backspin on my approaches to green from 100 yards in.

What a sporting gesture, very impressive from McGeady

2-0, lovely ball by Kombarov for Ari to tap in. Doing them down the flanks just as our manager said we would.

With the exception of larryduff, that is a pretty poor list in terms of credibility. Maybe Trap as well.

NCC’s praise of Ibramhimovic means that he just doesn’t make the cut. Sorry mate.

McGeady was brilliant there tonight, granted against weak opposition.

The move to a big club like Spartak might prove to be a masterstroke

Setanta debating the point, which we’ve done on here, that it may be better for our international team if more players experienced different styles of football and looked to play outside England. Friend of the forum Pat Dolan has upgraded McGeady’s status to top, top player after that and he also said at half time that Aiden was one of the best players in Europe in 2007/08 - I tend to agree with both points. It finished 3-0 to Spartak; they really are excellent going forward but I think their centre backs are quite suspect. They have Chelsea at home in 3 weeks in the first of the back-to-back fixtures with them and they’ll both have 6 points if Chelsea win tonight at home to Marseille. They’d be a great position to qualify if they can even get a point from that but the prolific Welliton was withdrawn with a hamstring injury.

Only saw the second half of that but it’s great to see McGeady turning it on like that on the Champions League stage. He wasn’t at his dazzling best but comfortably in the top three or four players on the pitch again and the more CL football he gets the better he will become.

Fairly made a mockery of Cronin’s article on the Spartak thread in the last half hour with a wandering performance and there’s more to come from him if he’s picked out in those positions more often. His quick feet are a real weapon on the wing but they’re just as dangerous in the hole in central areas and I think he’ll continue to damage in those areas for club and country.

The bigots who wish him ill luck will be on shortly to apologise no doubt.

Some first half from the boy McGeady, not as prominent in the 2nd, but he was the go to guy there time and time again. Great to see. Zilina are shite, but fuck it, the boy has settled in well so far. Early signs are good.

He was at his very best in the first half. He was more economical in the second half but still passed it well and linked the play excellently. He just tormented them completely in the first half though.

He had a great 1st half Rocko-probably tired in the second but still effective

fair enough

Yeah saw some brief highlights of the first half at halftime where he looked effective.

I liked what I saw when it was 2-0. He was happy to get on the ball, used it well and offered an option to guys in possession both outside and inside on numerous occasions. The pass to Ari near the end was a bit like his involvement in the Keane goal against Andorra. It’s nice to see him playing that more subdued role effectively when his team is already in front. That’s the sort of style that he’ll need to play with Ireland sometimes.

Arsenal and Bayern both available at evens tonight. Going for both.

ROMA
Lobont,
Cicinho, Mexes, Burdisso, Castellini,
Pizarro, De Rossi,
Menez, Perotta, Vucinic,
Totti.

A bit of squad rotation with the likes of Juan and Boriello rested.

Arsenal in Belgrade, one floodlight out, but game is going ahead anyway it seems. Tis a rather partizan atmosphere.
