I’d be thinking the latter. Unless there was a remarkably sudden deterioration it should have been obvious he couldn’t play. He relies an awful lot on his power too - they needed to test him properly in sustained sprints which I presume they avoided.
Bale would have finished that on a wet evening in Stoke.
