One of my favourite Celts of recent years. Unlike many (stand up Piper) I was delighted when he signed for Celtic because I thought he was a quality striker who was shafted at Chelsea. He was a superb player for O’Neill. From his goals in the 6-2 game against the huns on his second start, to his magnificent header against Ajax the following season and the way he came on and changed the game at home to Barca in our CL defeat at Celtic Park.
Top 3 Sutton moments are:
Goal against Ajax in Amsterdam: the first notable European scalp for Celtic in many years and the sign that we were now a team to be respected across the continent. Gets the ball in the middle of the park, plays a wide ball for the overlapping Agathe and jogs towards the box. As Agathe nears the end line Sutton picks up his pace and thunders into the box as the ball arrives and powers a header home.
The goal against the huns in the last couple of minutes in the whitewash season. The huns were bouncing up and down celebrating a “glorious draw” in a miserable season for them because we’d beaten them 5 out of 5 before then. A long ball then breaks for Sutton and he plays a little 1-2 with Larsson before shrugging off De Boer with contempt and lobbing Klos. Wonderful.
His quotes:
“I’m here to put Rangers in their place” when he joined.
“We knew Dunfermline would lie down to Rangers” when they did.
Honourable mention to that volley against Juventus.
Had the pleasure of being at both games that you mentioned. Larsson said he was the best strike partner he ever played with. i think thats the biggest compliment you can pay him
An absolute class player. Larsson actually said he was the best player he ever played with. (not just striker) Had huge presence about him and gave everything for Celtic. Had a great attitude and my two favourite memories of him are:
Wearing a tweed jacket with other English country gentlemen gear to a press conference
Completely blanking David Tanner during a live interview
That header at the back post in his first old firm game

That sums him up. A superb player for Celtic. Rocko - post up those goals in his honour.
One of my favourite Celtic goals, fantastic team goal and a bullet header from Sutton to finish. I was irked about the lazy journalism during Martin O’Neill’s tenure that portrayed his Celtic side as a long ball outfit when it couldn’t be further from the truth, we were actually very patient and measured in our approach, it’s just a shame Lubo Moravcik wasn’t a couple of years younger when O’Neill arrived.
