I enjoyed that immensely

This piece, it’s fucking brilliant and very true. You could easily transpose it to Gaelic football too. Very similar to what Aidan Fennelly said in the same paper recently before the Portlaoise exec allowed the players push him out the door. Let the defenders defend.

And he goes on a long spin talking about defending, a topic on which he is fervent in his beliefs.

“I was never too much of a fan of playing plus one or two or three defenders. A lot of the career coaches will say their starting point is they don’t want to lose, rather than going out to win. It wasn’t something that I believed in. If you were going to lose, I’d rather lose by 10 than lose by one [playing that way].

“The whole sweeper thing, I just didn’t like that. I didn’t believe in that way of playing, being overly defensive. Historically we always had brilliant defenders. Always. The best defenders in the country going back for years and then all of a sudden we’d no defenders.”

He has the reason why ready to go when you ask.

“We’d no defenders because they were always looking for a plus one or a plus two. That was the culture. At minor, under 21 and senior. This culture of having help. We never had help. Our defenders never needed help.

“We had a minor team beaten by 40 points by Cork [Munster championship 2021]. By 40 points. Look at the job Terence Fahy has done with the under 20s this year. They were unlucky [losing to Cork], beaten by four points by the same team that beat them by 40 points [three years earlier]. All because he’s coaching the players to attack the ball. The half-back line should play as proper half-backs. The full-back line should play as proper full-backs. Attacking the ball, taking on responsibility and beating your man.

“Sometimes people can make hurling very complicated. I don’t think you’ll ever have a sweeper-based team to win an All-Ireland. The sweeper is in place now for 15 years.”

To Lohan, that way of playing places an unacceptable limit on a team’s potential.

“I thought we’d lost the art of defending. By constantly having that plus one you were taking that risk away and you weren’t winning matches. You weren’t trusting the individuals out there.

The career coach dig won’t go unnoticed.

Didn’t he get Clare beat against Kilkenny in 2023 by playing a sweeper.

Did you read the article just posted? He spoke in detail about it

Morto

Yes. Changed back to orthodox at half time though

Only thing annoys me there is the whole thing about the minors losing by 40 to cork and then only by a few points as U20s. That narrative is fairly off.

Clare 8 different starters at U20 from that day at Minor

Cork 6 different starters at U20 from that day at Minor

That’s a completely different match

A few random thoughts on the spring ahead

Darragh Lohan at three after holding up fine when pressed into action there in the A/I final. Think it makes sense to give him opportunities til Cleary returns but would be surprised if he is commanding enough in his hurling for it. Think he is better suited to corner or wing as a sticky man marker. Think there are some nice options for full back coming through but they all need time - Conneally, Keane, Woods and McNamara from last years minor team all look to have a lot of the tools needed for a senior full back.

Jack O’Neill is the only member of the under 20s panel currently involved in the senior panel which means the 20s should get a good clear run at it. A number of the better 20s are in leaving cert so not surprising that they aren’t involved.

With that in mind it makes it a big enough year for a few lads in the 22 to 24 bracket who will need to make an impact or have their places on the panel taken by the 2023 minors coming in stream in the next couple of years. Colm O’Meara is a lad I’d like to see get a decent shot at it in the league, has a good engine and a direct hurler we could do with a couple of options from 8 to 12 off the bench. Think he has more to offer than Paddy Donnellan who simply isn’t big enough for I/C midfield. Jack O’Neill will make the championship 26 I’d say but could do with Crotty or Gearoid Sheedy taking a step forward along with O’Meara.

I’d also like to see Aidan Mc get some time at half forward, he was excellent there in 2021 before the leg break and think it suits his style if hurling better. While he is a decent finisher I think his movement inside is pretty poor, most his scores come from him taking a short pass or coming off the shoulder of a lad which he is very good at and you have more opportunities to drift towards breaks and make room for yourself at half forward. We also have a good amount of inside forward options.

Only four lads added to the panel as far as I know - Ian McNamara, Daithi Lohan, Rian Considine and Shane Woods I think were the names I heard. With Flanagan and Morey gone there are at least two spots open in the championship 26.

The biggest surprise is Cahill from Eire Og not being on the panel. He looks good

He was on the panel a couple of years ago.
Just my own observation but it doesn’t look like he has kicked on physically compared to others his age.
