Loughmore last year in Tipp. Lost both their Munster club games then. Vincentâs might have done it in Dublin too
In Clare it was back in the early 1900s I believe
The Clare senior hurling final between Cratloe and Crusheen will be live on TG4 this Sunday
In '54 Barefield won the hurling and Faughs, who were a combined Eire Og and St Joes, won the football.
St Flannans met Thurles today in Harty cup. 4-22 to 0-5. WTF is happening with Clare schools?
Flannanâs havenât had a decent side since Tony Kelly did his Leaving Cert. Since they stopped taking in boarding and became a mixed school they have gone way back in hurling terms as they are no longer getting East Clare lads and farmers sons from Limerick and North Tipp to attend there.
I think the role of boarders in Flannans teams of the past tends to get overstated. The core of the teams of the past was always Townies, Magpies, lads from Newmarket and some from Doora (lads from Barefield tended to go to the Brothers), with a boarder or two from north Tipp, Limerick or far east Clare thrown into the mix.
They always pulled players from all over Clare, that is no longer the case. With a female principal and a mix student population hurling is no longer held in the same regard as it was before in the college. Add to that a change in emphasis in the Clare development squads over the last decade where smaller and more technical hurlers are being produded who are not suited to the conditions the Harty is played in doesnât help.
Not too long ago the Flannanâs college was for all intents and purposes the Clare development squad and it was not unheard of to have 20 lads attending Flannanâs also on the Clare minor panel, looking back it was no surprise to see these lads contesting and winning Harty Cups in the winter months only to be well beaten at I/C minor level when the ground hardened and physicality and size was not as important. While it is a shame to see a proud hurling school like Flannanâs taking hammerings in the long run it is good for Clare hurling, i see the Rice College won in the Dean Ryan last week and there is a far better spread across the schools compared to a decaded and more when lads would often switch to Flannans after the Junior Cert or repeat the Leaving there to play hurling.
There wasnât near as many secondary schools in Clare back in the day, there are more options now, so yes that dilutes. But that doesnât change the fact that core of the team was invariably lads from the greater Ennis area (including NoF). The decline of hurling fortunes of those clubs has also contributed to the decline in Flannans. Being a mixed school hasnât helped either.
But overall Clare hurling is in a better state now than in the past, so itâs not a bad thing in the grand scheme of things.

Itâs all the townies fault.
Fuck off you redneck cunt.
Whatâs the population in Ennis?
The Banner is a farce and Eire Og maybe send out 2 teams an age group winning sporadically.
Look mate, itâs only logical that sophisticated urbanites will be drawn to more intellectual pursuits that take them away from stick fighting.
In fairness, The population of Eire Ogâs catchment area is probably not much greater than years past. A lot of the population increase is actually in surrounding parishes.
Intellectual persuits like going to see some washed up comedian in Glor?
The percentage of students from Ennis/Clarecastle are has increased quite significantly in the last few years with bus routes changing. Before, Harty teams were made up from a lot of different clubs whereas now itâs far more restricted.
Just listening to this again. Christ Waterford were some shower of whinging cunts

They still are. I read that god awful book by Damien Tiernan on Waterford hurling, and the whinging they do about the preparation for the '08 final is unreal. One of the complaints they had was that having a quiz the evening before the game was too competitive. And as a result, the lads had built up too much adrenaline and found it hard to sleep.
Fucked before he started typing.
My beloved Mount Sion pulled off the double many times in Waterford apart from the year when Brickey Rangers ran horses onto the field to thwart a Mount Sion victory. Still known as the Giddy Up county final.
