Classic Cars

Any forumite possess such a thing?

Would it become a money pit?

Would love a classic mini but just don’t know if it might be worth any trouble that might follow.

Do you know you way around under the hood of a car?
Very expensive hobby otherwise, my old fella restored a mark1 Escort for a mate of his about 20 years ago, still on the go for shows etc
Unless you can do it yourself and put in the yards for parts it’s a money pit yes

I’d say you’d struggle to buy the right oil

Why would you buy a mini? They were junk then and they’re unlikely to have improved. A Volkswagen corrado, audi 80 or toyota supra might be worth a look. Not too expensive, parts available, safe, comfortable and enjoyable to drive…they’re still around at handy money.

I think it would make sense to buy a good example and spend a little on maintenance, rather than the other way about …

Brent crude.

being saving a fortune lately putting diesel into the car tbh… smokes a bit for the first while and you get used to the burning smell… i dont know why all ppl still buy petrol at all

probably as i would like to.

I’ve got two and had a few.
They are great oul yokes.
The engines tend not to give too much trouble on mine, and are a fairly easy fix.
In my experience, you are waaaay better of paying a premium for a good one.
The bodywork is absolutely key. Try and buy off a collector’s/enthusiasts forum if you can.
Don’t rush into it.
Try and buy just before Christmas.
Even if it costs a grand or two a year to get it right, and keep it right, you’re not losing on depreciation.
People let you out at junctions and genuinely like to chat about them.
I’d highly recommend it.
You’re really looking for one off a serial doer upper, who has finished it, driven it for a bit, and got bored and has another project.
I’ve generally sold for more than I paid, but have lost overall getting them right.
PS if you have a garage to keep it out of the winter it’s a huge plus.
PS I’ve had jags and mercs.
Look for a UK mini forum. Study it and make a few friends in there. Be patient. Exactly what you want will come up.

Thanks mate.

Did you do much of the work yourself?

No I havent the time, inclination, ability, learning or talent.
One piece of advice, and I’ve learned the hard way, if there is anything at all that you are uneasy about. Anything about the car or the seller that even vaguely in the back of your mind makes you slightly unsettled, walk away.
