Co. Kilkenny and Irish Republican Revolution

I’m reading Charles Townshend’s book The Republic - The Fight for Irish Independence 1919-23 at the moment. The accusations of Kilkenny cowardice in 1798 in allegedly pissing on gun powder have been well documented but seemingly that same reluctance to engage in combat was still there over 100 years on from 1798. Townshend has a lot of references to the complete failure of the Kilkenny brigade to engage in any combat during this period.

Too busy playing cricket…

And inbreeding

A shower of utter cunts.

Ernie O’Malley was sent down to them to try and ginger them up but to no avail and in the heel of the hunt he ended up being captured himself because of the incompetence of the Inistioge brigade.

The lack of effort and cowardice I suspect. They probably squealed on him to save themselves.

Looks he did a good job of gingering them.
